Lewis Softball Goes 2-1 Against The Spring Games Competition On Friday

Flyers drop opener to Felician (7-4), but rally for wins against Lake Erie (13-5 (6 inn.)) and Lake Superior State (11-5).

Clermont, Fla. - The Lewis University softball team scored 28 total runs and went 2-1 in three games on Friday (March 4). The Flyers (8-7) dropped their opener to Felician (7-4), but rallied for wins against both Lake Erie (13-5 (6 inn.)) and Lake Superior State (11-5).
   In three contests, Lewis freshman first baseman Carley Maupin (Peotone, Ill./Peotone) and senior second baseman Frankie Castagna (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) batted a combined 9-for-16 with three home runs and 11 RBI. Castagna tied a school-record with seven RBI in the win over Lake Erie with a pair of home runs, including a grand slam.
   Lewis returns to action on Saturday (March 5) against both Northwood (9 AM ET) and Cedarville (11 AM ET).

Felician scored six unanswered runs off of Lewis freshman pitcher Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) to earn the 7-4 non-conference victory over the Flyers on Friday morning.

Sanders (1-1) allowed seven runs - five earned - and seven hits in 4.2 innings of work, while walking three. The Falcons took advantage of a Sanders' bases loaded hit-by-pitch, bases loaded walk, passed ball and wild pitch in a five-run fifth inning.

Her counterpart Kaila Gerber (2-0) surrendered four runs - three earned - and six hits, while fanning four for the complete-game victory.

Lewis sophomore Jenna Cairo (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) led the Flyers offensively with a two-run double in the fourth inning.

Game Two

Lewis recorded 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim the 13-5 (6 inn.) regional victory over Lake Erie on Friday afternoon. Maupin (3-for-3, 4 runs, 2 RBI, HR) and senior catcher Brittany Russell (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) batted a combined 7-for-7 with five runs scored and three RBI. Russell was 4-for-4 at the dish with a RBI and a run scored.

Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Lewis sent 15 batters to the plate to earn the walk-off win. In that frame, the Flyers received RBI from sophomore right fielder Alise Perna (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley), Cairo, Maupin, freshman third baseman Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego), Castagna and Russell. Senior pitcher Ali Brems (Kenosha, Wis./Harborside) and sophomore outfielder Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) both notched two RBI in the inning. 

Brems (4-2) tossed one inning of scoreless relief to earn the win for the Flyers. Lake Erie relief pitcher Allyson Deemer (4-4) took the loss for the Storm, allowing seven runs and seven hits in 2.2 innings of work.

Castagna tied an eight-year old school-record as the senior second baseman went 3-for-4 with seven RBI, two runs scored and two home runs including a grand slam to help the Flyers rally from a three-run deficit and beat Lake Superior State, 11-5.

Castagna tied Mallory Paine's mark of seven RBI in a single game, set against Kentucky Wesleyan on April 13, 2008.

Lofthouse was equally as adept at the dish as she went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored, including a two-run double. Prieto was 2-for-4 with a RBI in the win.

Lewis freshman pitcher Paige Fossey (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) tossed 3.1 innings of relief to earn her second win of the season. Fossey (2-2) allowed two runs and four hits while striking out two batters. Lake Superior State starting pitcher Alyssa Thayer (1-4) allowed 11 runs - six earned - and 10 hits, while walking five batters in six innings.
