Belleville, Ill. - The Lewis University women's tennis team extended its winning streak to six matches with a 9-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference shutout over McKendree University at Southwestern Illinois College on Friday (April 15).
With the win, Lewis improves to 12-4 overall and 4-0 in conference action, while the host Bearcats drop to 9-10 on the campaign and 0-4 in GLVC play.
The Flyers opened with a 8-0 whitewash at No. 2 doubles, as seniors
Megan Nguyen (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) and
Jill Wetmore (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa) paired up to defeat McK's Jessica Gaither and Charlee Goodman. Nguyen added a 6-0, 6-1 win over Tori Lindsay at No. 3 singles, while Wetmore picked up the 6-4, 6-0 victory over Gaither at No. 4 singles.
At No. 1 doubles, Lewis sophomores
Dora Andrejszki (Budapest, Hungary/Dozsa Gyorgy) and
Nora Mindiyarova (Moscow, Russia/Gimnasium 1577) earned the 8-1 win over McK's Kelcie Comley and Janelle Fung. Andrejszki dropped Comley, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Mindiyarova upended Fung, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
Lewis' No. 3 doubles team of
Megan Conlin (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) and
Hannah Cross (Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood Community) collected the 9-7 win over McKendree's Hannah Harry and Lindsay. Conlin bested Goodman, 6-3, 7-6 (3) at No. 5 singles, while Cross won at No. 6 singles due to injury default
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (April 16), as they head to the state capital for an 11 AM first serve against Illinois Springfield.
