ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – It was a perfect day for baseball at Brennan Field on Saturday (April 16) with temperatures in the 70s and only a few clouds in the sky. Lewis dropped game one to Saint Joseph's 3-0 before bouncing back for a 6-2 win in the nightcap.
Game One – Saint Joseph's 3, Lewis 0 (HTML Box | PDF Box)
Game one was the Zachary Aring show. Aring, the starting pitcher for Saint Joseph's, went eight innings. He struck out 10 Flyers while giving up five hits. Lewis had their chances, stranding eight total runners. The Flyers put two on in the eighth with one out. But the rally was halted by Aring with a strikeout and a flyout to end the threat.
Junior
Alex Shake (Glasford, Ill./Canton) threw seven innings, allowing three runs and seven hits with three strikeouts. He is now 4-2 with the loss.
Aring moved his record to 4-3 with the win. Kevin Ford picked up his fourth save of the year for the Pumas.
Saint Joseph's scored two runs in the first on a two-out, two-run home run by Garrett O'Neill to left field. Their third and final run came in the seventh on an RBI by Jacob Bigos.
Sophomore
Neal Tyrell (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) had a hit and a walk for Lewis in game one.
Game Two – Lewis 6, Saint Joseph's 2 (HTML Box | PDF Box)
The Lewis offense totaled 11 hits in the seven-inning game two. Senior
Joe Sparacio (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) had three hits, a run scored and a run batted in. His RBI came in the second inning to score junior
Austin Schultz (Greensburg, Ind./Greensburg). It gave the Flyers a lead they wouldn't surrender.
The big inning was the fourth when Lewis sent three around to the plate. Sophomore
Joel Rotkvich (Crestwood, Ill./St. Laurence) tripled over the left fielder's head to knock in Sparacio who started the frame with a double. Rotkvich came around on a sacrifice fly by junior
Brandon Collins (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Way North). Tyrell also scored in the inning.
The Flyers scored a run in each inning except for the first and fifth.
Junior
Sam Couch (Bolingbrook, Ill./Joliet Catholic) earned the win for the Flyers. He started and went six innings. He allowed two runs and four hits with five strikeouts. His record is now 1-2. Quinn Snarkis took the loss for Saint Joseph's, he is 3-4.
"I thought both our starting pitchers did a great job," Lewis head coach
Tim McDonough said. "Alex threw the ball about as well as he has all year. We just didn't score any runs in game one. You have to tip your cap to their guy. Sam came in and did a great job in game two."
Saint Joseph's is 19-17 (7-7 GLVC). Lewis is now 18-13 (8-6 GLVC). The Flyers and Pumas will play another doubleheader on Sunday (April 17) at Brennan Field in a noon start.
