Lewis Baseball Suffers DH Sweep (16-9 & 10-2) To Bellarmine

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis baseball dropped a pair of contests on Friday (May 6) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Brennan Field. Lewis lost the first game 16-9 and the second 10-2. It is Lewis' first time being swept in a twin bill this year since April 2.

The Flyers now find themselves on the outside looking in to the GLVC Tournament if the season ended today. However a sweep on Saturday (May 7) of Bellarmine would vault Lewis ahead of the Knights and into the tournament.

"We still have everything in our control," Lewis head coach Tim McDonough said. "That is what we need to keep in mind and just focus on a good day of baseball tomorrow."

Game One – Bellarmine 16, Lewis 9 (HTML Box | PDF Box)
It was a 3-2 Bellarmine lead after six innings before the Knights opened it up with 13 runs over the final three innings.

"It was a day where our pitchers just didn't have it," McDonough said. "Credit Bellarmine for taking advantage."

For the Flyers, freshman Brandon Post (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) hit his first career home run in a 4-of-4 effort with four runs batted in. He finished with a two-run home run in the seventh, while adding a double and two singles.

Alex Shake (Glasford, Ill./Canton) took the loss to drop his record to 5-4. He allowed four runs on seven hits in 6.0 innings of work. He is now 5-4 with the loss. Michael Messier earned the win for Bellarmine. He is 6-5 after allowing seven runs (five earned) in 7.2 innings of work.

Senior Joe Sparacio (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) added a solo home run in the ninth inning.

Game Two – Bellarmine 10, Lewis 2 (HTML Box | PDF Box)
Bellarmine took control of game two with three runs in the first and then three more in the second inning. Sophomore Sam Cybulski (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Lyons Township) had a two-out, 2-RBI single in the second inning to make it a 6-2 game and give Lewis some life. But Bellarmine got the two runs back in the third to extend their lead to 8-2.

Junior Sam Couch (Bolingbrook, Ill./Joliet Catholic) took the loss for Lewis. He is 2-4 after allowing three runs in the first. Hunter Spencer went the distance for Bellarmine. He is 6-2 with the win.

Sparacio had two hits in game two. Freshman Zach Parker (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) and junior Austin Schultz (Greensburg, Ind./Greensburg) each scored a run.

Bellarmine improves to 23-23 (14-10 GLVC). Lewis falls to 25-20 (14-12 GLVC). Saturday's doubleheader will have a noon start. It will be Senior Day for the Flyers.
