Phoenix, Ariz. - The No. 6 Lewis University men's volleyball team rallied from both a two-game deficit and match-point in the fourth game to earn the 23-25, 18-25, 25-19, 28-26, 15-13 victory over Grand Canyon in the Flyers' Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association opener at Antelope Gymnasium on Friday (Jan. 27) night.
The victory extends Lewis' winning streak to six matches and is the Flyers' fourth five-game win in their last five matches. Lewis was 1-8 in five-game matches in 2016.
Lewis improves to 6-1 on the season and 1-0 in MIVA play, while the Lopes are now 3-4 overall and 2-1 in conference action.
Lewis redshirt sophomore opposite hitter
Mitch Perinar (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) was dominant in his second-straight match, tying a career-high with 27 kills. Perinar had a hitting percentage of .438 (27 kills, 6 errors, 48 attacks) and accounted for 43.5% (27-for-62) of Lewis' kills. The Channahon, Ill., native added a team and season-high eight digs.
The Flyers also received 15 kills from redshirt freshman outside hitter
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, Wis./Franklin), while sophomore setter
Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo) dished out a match-high 52 assists. Yoshimoto also contributed five kills and finished with a perfect hitting percentage of 1.000 (5-0-5).
Lewis redshirt senior middle blocker
Jacob Schmiegelt (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) topped the Flyers with nine total blocks (1 solo).
The Flyers hit .283 (62-26-127) for the match, while the Lopes managed to hit .177 (50-30-113).
Both teams return to action on Sunday (Jan. 29) for a 1 PM MT first serve.
