Lewis Baseball Splits Slugfest With Saint Joseph's (L, 14-7; W, 23-11 (8))

Teams combine for 55 runs and 14 home runs.

Rensselaer, Ind. - The Lewis University baseball team and Saint Joseph's combined for 55 runs and 14 home runs in their Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 15), as the Pumas won the opener 14-7, while the Flyers picked up the 23-11 (8 inn.) win in the nightcap at Gil Hodges Field.

With the split, Lewis is now 8-27 overall and 4-12 in GLVC action, while the host Pumas move to 24-13 on the campaign and 7-9 in conference play.

Lewis returns to action on Tuesday (Apr. 18), as the Flyers welcome Quincy for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 PM.

Saint Joseph's broke open a 3-all tie in the fourth inning, with 11 unanswered runs - including three home runs - as the host Pumas claimed the 14-7 win in the opener.

Lewis starting pitcher Nick Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) took the loss, allowing seven runs - six earned - and nine hits in 3.2 innings of work. Davito struck out six batters.

Lewis junior left fielder Ethan Bloom (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates) connected for a two-run homer in the seventh inning, while first baseman Kenny King (Orland Park, Ill./Providence ) and freshman catcher Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill. /St. Laurence) each had two hits and a RBI.

Lewis pounded out a season-high 23 runs, 22 hits, 18 RBI and four home runs, as the Flyers rallied from an 8-1 third inning deficit on their way to the 23-11 (8 inn.) win over the Pumas in the nightcap.

The top six batters in the Flyer lineup batted .625 (20-for-32) with 18 runs, 16 RBI and four home runs.

Lewis junior infielder Neal Tyrell (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) was 5-for-6 with five runs, three RBI and a two-run homer, while senior center fielder Brandon Collins (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Way North) was 4-for-5 with five RBI, five runs and a three-run homer. King was 3-for-6 with a three-run homer and two runs scored, while Bloom was 3-for-5 with a RBI and a run.

Flyer junior left fielder Jermaine Terry (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) was 3-for-5, scored three times and drove in a run, while freshman third baseman Austin Tittle (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) was 3-for-5 with three RBI, two runs and a solo home run. Lewis freshman shortstop Ryan Schefske (Lombard, Ill. /Glenbard East) drove in a pair and scored once in the win.

Lewis senior reliever Alex Shake (Glasford, Ill./Canton) earned the win, allowing four runs - three earned - and seven hits in 5.2 innings of work. Shake struck out five batters and walked four.
