ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The eighth ranked Lewis University Flyer men's volleyball team ran its winning streak to eight straight with a sweep of Quincy (25-20, 25-13, 25-16) on Saturday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers (8-3, 2-0 MIVA) hit .400 for the match and had a season-high 12 service aces.
Lewis trailed 9-7 in the opening set before taking control with an 11-4 run. The Flyers had five service aces in the run including three straight from
Kyle Bugee (Los Altos, CA/Homestead). Quincy (8-5, 0-3 MIVA) cut the deficit to 19-16 but were unable to get any closer as Lewis stretched its lead back out to five and won the set on a kill from
Mitch Perinar (Channahon, IL/Minooka).
The second set saw five ties and three lead changes early on before the Flyers took control with a 12-2 run to overcome an 8-6 deficit. Bugee served back-to-back aces to give Lewis the lead and they took advantage of six attack errors from the Hawks.
Quincy cut the lead to seven but the Flyers ended the frame scoring seven of the final nine points to cruise to the 25-13 win.
In the finale, Lewis used an 8-1 run to break a 6-all tie and cruise to the 25-16 set win. They hit .381 in the stanza but it was their defense that carried them holding the Hawks to a negative .037 hitting percentage and had 4.5 blocks.
Perinar and
TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington) had five kills each to pace the Flyers while Bugee,
Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) and
Jake Walenga (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln Way North) added three kills each. Yoshimoto also had 23 assists and was tied with
Michael Simmons (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) with four digs.
Quincy finished the match with an attack percentage of .108 (29 kills/21 errors/74 attempts). Anthony Winter and Omari Wheeler had six kills each to lead the way. Noah Randall dished out 24 assists while Collin Merk finished with seven digs.
Lewis returns to the court next Friday traveling to Muncie, Ind., to take on Ball State at 7 p.m. (EST).
