Flyers fall in extra innings to Ashland

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Lewis Flyer softball team scored three times with two outs in the seventh to force extra innings but ultimately fell to Ashland 10-5 in nine innings on Friday morning at The Dome at the Ballpark in Rosemont, Ill. Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) led the Flyers (0-3) with three hits and had four RBI.

The Eagles (1-1) scored two batters into the game when Camille Pollutro homered to left field. Ashland added to its lead in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Paige Summer and Pollutro stole home when Dayna Denner got caught in a rundown between first and second.

Lewis got a run back in the home half of the third on a solo home run from Prieto. The Eagles extended their lead to 4-1 with a run in the fifth when Bree Gill singled down the left field line scoring Denner.

The Flyers rally in the seventh began with back-to-back two out walks to Amy Bukovsky (Aurora, Ill./Montini Catholic) and Cori Reynolds (Lansing, Ill./TF South). Prieto followed with a triple to left center to cut the deficit to 4-3. After a walk to Emily Guske (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem), Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) ripped a single into center to plate Prieto with the tying run. Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) had a chance to win the game for Lewis but grounded out to third to send the game to extra innings.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Ashland erupted for six runs in the ninth highlighted by Denner's two-run triple to center. Summer, Erika Farst, Cassie Haught and Halle Dorko drove in a run each in the frame. Lewis got a run back in the home half of the ninth on Prieto's single back up the middle.

The Flyers finished the game with seven hits with Prieto leading the way. Guske, Shaw, DeMasi and Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) had a hit apiece. Taylor Boelte (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) got the start allowing three runs on three hits in 2.2 innings of work. Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) came on in relief in the third and took the loss to fall to 0-1.
