CHICAGO, Ill. – The seventh ranked Lewis Flyer men's volleyball fell in straight sets at sixth ranked Loyola on Wednesday evening at Gentile Arena. The Flyers (11-5, 5-2 MIVA) finished the match with a hitting percentage of .151 and was led by
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) with 10 kills while
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) finished with five kills.
Lewis struggled to slow down the Rambler (13-3, 6-1 MIVA) offense in the opening set allowing them record 21 kills and hit .581 in the frame. Lewis led 4-3 but Loyola used a 5-0 run to retake the lead for good. It led by as many as eight in the set. Ricky Gevis had six kills to lead the Ramblers while
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook) led the Flyers with four kills.
The second set went back-and-forth for the first half of the stanza and was tied at 14 when the Ramblers used a 5-1 run to take a 19-15 lead and take control of the set. Lewis cut the lead to 20-17 after a service error but that would be the closest it got as Loyola scored five of the final seven points to win the set 25-19.
The Ramblers used a 12-2 run early in the third set to break a 3-all tie on its way to the 25-10 set win. Loyola hit .375 in the final set while holding the Flyers to a negative hitting percentage.
The Ramblers finished the match recording 49 kills against nine errors and had a hitting percentage of .449. Gevis finished with a match-high 16 kills while Collin Mahan added 11 kills.
Lewis is back at home on Friday when it takes on Lincoln Memorial in a 7 p.m. match at Neil Carey Arena.
