ROCHESTER, Minn. – Lewis University's softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against 24
th ranked Winona State 3-0 and 2-0 on Friday afternoon at the RCTC Dome in Rochester, Minn.
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) had three of the Flyers seven hits in the contest while
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland), Sarah Demasi,
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and
Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) had a hit each.
Game 1 – Winona State 3 Lewis 0
In the opener the Warriors (2-0) struck first with a run in the opening frame. Katelyn Kolb led off with a walk and then stole second with one out. With two outs, Mariah Schultz walked and then a wild pitch moved both runners up. McKenna Larson drove in Kolb with a single to short. Shaw avoided further damage getting Kristina Ahlers to strikeout looking.
Lewis (0-2) had a chance to tie the game in the fourth inning. Taylor worked a walk with two outs and Demasi followed with a single to left but a groundout to third ended the threat.
WSU tacked on another run in the home half of the fourth. With one out, Larson singled to right and then Ahlers reached on an error. After a strikeout, Ann Smolenski singled to center to bring home Larsen.
The Warriors added an insurance run in the sixth with a two out rally. Jamee Schleis doubled to left center and then scored on Smolenski's double down the left field line.
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) got Kolb to ground out to keep the deficit at three.
The Flyers had a chance to tie the game in the seventh getting back-to-back two out singles to bring the tying run to the plate but a groundout to third ended the game.
Lewis was held to three hits in the contest with Demasi, Shaw and Lofthouse recording a hit each. Shaw took the loss allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits in five innings pitched.
Game 2 – Winona State 2 Lewis 0
In the second game of the doubleheader the Warriors scored both of their runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run homer off the bat of Lani Van Zyl with one out in the inning.
The Flyers threatened in the fourth getting a one out double from Taylor but she was left stranded. They threatened again in the fifth getting a lead-off single but couldn't get the run home. Just like in game one, Lewis brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh but was unable to extend the game.
Shaw paced the Flyer attack recording two hits in the nightcap with Taylor and
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) adding a hit each.
Taylor Boelte (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) went the distance allowing two runs on five hits with a strikeout but walked four in the contest.
Lewis returns to action on Friday, February 23, when it takes on Ashland at the Flyer Dome Invitational at 11:30 a.m. in Rosemont, Ill.
