CLERMONT, Fla. – The Lewis Flyer softball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play splitting a doubleheader against William Jewell on Sunday afternoon at the Sleepy Hollow Complex in Clermont, Fla. The Cardinals (12-4, 1-1 GLVC) took the opener 2-0 while the Flyers (12-8, 1-1 GLVC) won the second game 3-2.
Game 1 – William Jewell 2, Lewis 0
The opener was pitcher's duel between Anna Bioando and
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) through the first five innings. William Jewell broke through with a two-out rally in the sixth starting with a two-out double by Emily Hoover and a walk to Kelsey Morgan. Allison Rawls broke up the shutout with a single to center to score Hoover.
The Cardinals added an insurance run in the seventh with another two-out rally. Madi Gilles walked and scored on Maddie Greenstreet's triple to center. Lewis had a chance to tie the game in the seventh putting the tying runs on base with one out but were unable to drive them in.
The Flyers were held to two hits in the contest with
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and
Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) recording a hit each. suffered the loss allowing two runs on six hits with a strikeout in the complete game effort. The loss snapped her seven-game winning streak.
Game 2 – Lewis 3, William Jewell 2
Lewis struck first in the backend of the doubleheader.
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) led off the home half of the second with a solo home run. The Flyers added two insurance runs in the fifth. With two outs, DeMasi singled to left and scored on
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist)'s home run.
William Jewell cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth on a bases loaded walk to Biondo and an RBI single from Courtney Beatty. Shaw was able to get out of the bases loaded jam by striking out Rawls to end the inning.
The Cardinals got the tying run to second in the seventh but Shaw got Brooke Bernard to fly out to left to end the game.
Lewis outhit William Jewell 7-5 in the nightcap with Shaw getting two of those. DeMasie, Prieto,
Emily Guske (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem),
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and
Alise Perna (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley) had a hit each. Shaw picked up the win in the circle allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts to improve to 3-2.
The Flyers finished their Spring Break trip to Florida going 9-4. They return to action next Saturday traveling to St. Charles, Mo., to take on the Maryville Saints in a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. The games will be played on the campus of Lindenwood University.
