ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis University Flyer softball team ran its winning streak to three with a sweep of the Maryville Saints 4-0 and 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo. The Flyers (14-8, 3-1 GLVC) finished with 10 hits in the doubleheader and were led by
Emily Guske (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem),
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) with two hits apiece.
Game 1 – Lewis 4, Maryville 0
The opener was scoreless through three innings though both sides had their chances as each stranded four. Lewis broke through in the fourth scoring all four runs after the first two batters were retired.
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) started the rally with a single and moved to second on
Kendyl Strack (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston)'s single down the right field line.
Alise Perna (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley) followed with a walk to load the bases.
Guske drove home Weber with the first run with a single to left. DeMasi followed with a single to center to score Strack and Perna to make it 3-0. Prieto capped the scoring with a single through the right side of the infield to bring in Guske with the final run of the inning.
That would be all the run support
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) needed as she shut down the Saints (13-8-1, 1-3 GLVC) offense giving up only six hits and struck out two to pick up the complete game shutout.
Both teams had six hits in the opener. Prieto had two hits to lead Lewis while Guske, DeMasi, Weber and Strack had a hit each.
Game 2 – Lewis 4, Maryville 3
Maryville jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a run in the home half of the first. Jaclyn Pasakarnis singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Kelsey Martin.
Lewis took the lead in the third inning scoring three times on two hits and two Saints errors. With two on and two out, Prieto walked to load the bases. Guske scored the tying run on a throwing error by the catcher and then Shaw reached on an error by the second baseman which scored DeMasi and Prieto.
Maryville responded with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game but Lewis regained the lead in the sixth. Prieto walked to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a groundout.
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) followed with a single to right to score Prieto with what proved to be the winning run.
The Saints threatened in the seventh with the tying and winning runs on base but Sanders got Courtney Ferguson to pop out to her to end the game.
Maryville out hit the Flyers 8-4 in the nightcap. Guske, DeMasi, Sanders and Perna had a hit each. Sanders picked up the win to improve to 10-3 on the season. She pitched seven innings allowing three runs on eight hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
Lewis concludes its road trip on Sunday traveling to Rolla, Mo., to take on Missouri S&T in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
