ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis Flyer softball nine nearly rallied from a five-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh but came up a run short in a 7-6 loss to Missouri-St. Louis in the second game of its doubleheader at the Lewis Softball Field on Sunday afternoon. The Flyers (14-14, 3-7 GLVC) dropped the opener 9-2.
Game 2 – Missouri-St. Louis 7, Lewis 6
Down by five in its final at-bat Lewis loaded the bases with no one out on two walks and a bunt single.
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) followed with a single to center to score
Kendyl Strack (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston) and an error by Carlie Kudary allowed Allie Piatt to score to make it 7-4. With one out,
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) singled through the right side of the infield to reload the bases for
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline). Shaw lined a single to center scoring
Emily Guske (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) and DeMasi and put the tying run 60 feet away. Carly Kingery got
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) to ground out back to the circle and
Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) to pop out to short to end the game.
The Tritons (18-14, 5-5 GLVC) broke on top in the second inning scoring four runs on five hits to take the lead. The Flyers got a run back in the third on a bases loaded walk to
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist). UMSL added three insurance runs in the sixth on an RBI single from Reagan Osborn and an error by Guske. Lewis scored an unearned run in its half of the sixth to make it a five-run game.
The Flyers finished with 10 hits in game two led by Shaw with three while Guske had two.
Taylor Boelte (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) suffered the loss allowing seven runs, five earned, on eight hits in 5.1 innings of work.
Game 1 – Missouri-St. Louis 9, Lewis 2
The Tritons struck quickly in the opener scoring two pitches into the game on Jennah Perryman's two-run homer to left field. UMSL added to its lead with three more in the second highlighted by Kudary's double to left center.
Lewis got on the board in the fourth on Shaw's two-run blast to left for her third home run of the season. The Tritons tacked on another run in the fifth on a single from Kingery and added three more in the sixth highlighted by Chelsea Martinez's two-run homer to left center.
The Flyers were held to three hits in the opener with Taylor recording two of them.
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) took the loss allowing five runs on five hits in 1.1 inning of work.
Lewis returns to the diamond on Friday traveling to Louisville to take on Bellarmine in a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. (CDT).
