LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Lewis Flyer softball team snapped its six-game losing streak with a 2-1 win at Bellarmine in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Flyers (15-15, 4-8 GLVC) dropped the nightcap to the Knights (11-17, 2-8 GLVC) 1-0.
Game 1 – Lewis 2, Bellarmine 1
The opener was a pitcher's duel between
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) and Sabrina Fussenegger as the two allowed only three hits through the first four innings. Lewis broke the scoreless tie in the fifth. With one out,
Kendyl Strack (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston) singled to left and
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) hit a two-run homer to center field on the first pitch she saw.
The score remained that way until the home half of the seventh. Sanders retired the first two hitters of the inning before Paige Dabney hit a solo home run to left to cut the Flyer lead in half. Samantha Smith followed with a walk and then Katie Stamper singled to left to put the tying and winning runs aboard. Sanders then got Allison Woosley to ground out back to the circle on 3-2 pitch to end the game.
Sanders went the distance allowing one run on four hits and struck out two to improve to 11-5. Strack, Weber and
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) added a hit each.
Game 2 – Bellarmine 1, Lewis 0
The second game was another pitcher's duel between
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) and Madeline Kurtz with the two throwing up zeros in the first four innings. Lewis had its chances leaving two on in the third and left the bases loaded in the fifth and sixth innings but couldn't get the clutch hit.
Bellarmine broke the scoreless deadlock on a solo home run off the bat of Woosley with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Flyers put the tying run in scoring position in the seventh but
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) lined out to first to end the game.
Shaw suffered the loss allowing the one run on four hits and struck out a pair to fall to 4-5 on the season. Shaw,
Emily Guske (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem),
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) and
Cori Reynolds (Lansing, Ill./TF South) had a hit apiece.
Lewis is back in action on Saturday traveling to Evansville, Ind., to take on Southern Indiana in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
