EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Lewis Flyer softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Southern Indiana on Saturday afternoon in Evansville, Ind. The Flyers (15-17, 4-10 GLVC) dropped the opener 6-1 and lost the second game 3-1.
Game 1 – Southern Indiana 6, Lewis 1
Southern Indiana (17-14, 6-6) scored the first run of the game in the home half of the first on a two-out walk and a double from Allison Schubert. The Screaming Eagles had a chance to add to their lead in the second loading the bases with one out but
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) got a strikeout and a fly out to escape the jam.
Lewis tied the game in the fourth.
Emily Guske (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) led off the inning with a bunt single to third and came around to score on
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline)'s one out double to left center.
USI regained the lead in the home half of the fourth taking advantage of an error and getting a two-run single from Jennifer Leonhardt with the bases loaded. The Eagles tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth.
The Flyers were held to five hits in the opener with Guske, Shaw,
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew),
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) and
Alise Perna (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley) recording a hit each. Sanders allowed six runs on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk to fall to 11-6 on the season.
Game 2 – Southern Indiana 3, Lewis 1
Southern Indiana took the lead in the nightcap scoring three times on five hits and an error in the home half of the third. Leonhardt, Schubert and Caitlyn Bradley had RBI singles in the frame.
Lewis got one of those runs back in the fourth.
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch and went to third on an error when Shaw reached. Prieto scored on a throwing error by the shortstop on a fielder's choice by
Kendyl Strack (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston). The Flyers got the tying run into scoring position but couldn't the two-hit out to tie the game.
Guske had two of Lewis' four hits in the game while Shaw and Perna had a hit each.
Taylor Boelte (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) went the first 2.1 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits and a walk. Shaw went the final 3.2 innings allowing only two hits.
The Flyers return home on Thursday to begin an eight-game homestand beginning with a doubleheader against Davenport at 2 p.m.
