ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Lewis Flyer softball team split its doubleheader with Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday evening at The Dome at the Ballpark in Rosemont, Ill. The Flyers (16-18, 5-11 GLVC) took the opener 2-0 but dropped the nightcap 7-2.
Game 1 – Lewis 2, Wisconsin-Parkside 0
Lewis had its chances early but didn't break through until the third when
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) lined a single to right center scoring
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist). The Flyers had a chance for more but left two stranded.
The Rangers (17-17, 8-8 GLVC) had a chance to tie the game in the sixth with their first two hitters reached but
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) got Megan Alverti to ground into a 4-3 double play and then after a walk she got Danielle Crockett to pop out.
Parkside brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh but Allison Hausl grounded out to short to end the game.
Lewis outhit the Rangers 9-3 in the contest. DeMasi, Prieto, Shaw and Taylor had two hits apiece. Shaw evened her record at 5-5 tossing a complete game three-hit shutout. She struck out four and walked three in the contest.
Game 2 – Wisconsin-Parkside 7, Lewis 2
The Flyers jumped on top with a one out in the first. DeMasi reached on a single to third and advanced to third on Prieto's ground rule double to right center. Shaw drove her in with a sacrifice fly to right.
Parkside scored two runs on three hits and a pair of walks to take the lead in the top of the second. Madison Manders tied the game with a single to right and then Adrien Hall drove in Samantha Newtoff with a ground rule double to left.
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) limited the damage to two runs by working out of a bases loaded jam with one out.
Lewis tied the game in its half of the second.
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) led off the inning with a triple to right center and scored on Sanders sacrifice fly to right.
The Rangers regained the lead scoring three runs on three hits and an error in the third. Parkside added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on a two-run single off the bat of Megan Aliverti.
The Flyers had nine hits in the contest led by Prieto and
Emily Guske (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem). DeMasi, Taylor,
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland),
Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) and
Kendyl Strack (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston) had a hit apiece. Sanders fell to 11-7 on the season after allowing seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits. She struck out four and walked three.
Lewis will host Indianapolis in a doubleheader on Monday afternoon beginning at 12 p.m. at the Dome at the Ballpark in Rosemont, Ill.
