CLERMONT, FL – Lewis University's softball team picked up a pair of wins on Monday rallying for an 8-5 win over University of the Sciences (Pa.) in the morning then defeated Nyack College (N.Y.) 12-4 in the afternoon game.
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) and
Kendyl Strack (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston) had three hits each in the opener while
Lauren Brennan (Cantonment, Fla./J.M. Tate) and
Carley Maupin (Peotone, Ill./Peotone) had two hits apiece in the second game.
Game 1 – Lewis 8 University of the Sciences 5
The Flyers (6-5) struck for three runs in the first inning.
Emily Guske (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) reached on an error to begin the game and scored on a pair of errors by the third baseman and right fielder on
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport)'s sacrifice bunt. DeMasi would score on the play as well to make it 2-0. After an out, Shaw hit her first home run of the season to make it 3-0.
Taylor Boelte (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) held the Devils (2-7) bats in check for the first three innings but UScieneces scored five runs on five hits and took advantage of an error in the fourth. Emily Harris and Madison LaPlante each had two run singles in the frame.
Lewis got a run back in the fifth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) which scored
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist).
The Flyers regained the lead in the sixth scoring four runs on four hits.
Amy Bukovsky (Aurora, Ill./Montini Catholic) led off the inning with a walk, but the next two hitters were retired. DeMasi doubled to left then Prieto walked to load the bases. Shaw delivered a single to right scoring Bukovsky and DeMasi to give Lewis a 6-5 lead. Taylor followed with an RBI double to score Prieto and then Strack drove in Shaw with a single to center.
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley), pitching in relief of Boelte, gave up a lead-off double in the seventh but retired the next three hitters to end the game.
The Flyers had 11 hits in the opener led by Shaw and Strack with three each while DeMasi finished with two. Shaw and Taylor combined to drive in five of the eight runs. Boelte went the first 3.1 innings allowing four runs on five hits but walked six in the contest. Sanders came in with one out in the fourth and went the rest of the way allowing an unearned run on four hits with seven strikeouts.
Game 2 – Lewis 12 Nyack 4
In the second game, Lewis scored a pair of runs on two hits and two errors in the top of the first against the Warriors. DeMasi came into a score on an error by the second baseman and Shaw would score on a wild pitch.
The Flyers broke it open in the second scoring five runs on three hits and three Nyack (2-5) errors. DeMasi, Taylor, Maupin and
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) each had RBIs in the inning. The Warriors scored three times on four hits in the third but Lewis added four in the sixth and one more in the seventh. Nyack added a solo home run with one out in the sixth.
Lewis outhit the Warriors 11-7 in the contest and was led by Brennan and Maupin with two hits each. Maupin drove in four runs in the contest. Sanders picked up her second win of the day allowing four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts to improve to 4-2.
The Flyers are back in action on Tuesday with two more games in Clermont, Fla. They'll take on Ferris State at 10 a.m. (CST) and then will play the College of Saint Rose at 2 p.m. (CST).
