KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Lewis Flyer softball team split its doubleheader with Truman State on Saturday afternoon at the Truman Softball Park in Kirksville, Mo. The Flyers (18-22, 7-15 GLVC) won the second game 6-2 while the Bulldogs (22-18, 11-13 GLVC) took the opener 9-0 in six innings.
Game 2 – Lewis 6, Truman State 2
Lewis jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap scoring four batters into the contest on a three-run home run to left field off the bat of
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) for her fifth of the season. Truman scored an unearned run in the bottom half of the first to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Flyers got that run back with a two-out rally in the second.
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) was hit on the 12
th pitch of her at-bat then advanced to second on
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport)'s single to left.
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) drove in Prieto with a single down the right field line to make it 4-1.
The Bulldogs cut the lead in half with an unearned run in the fifth but Lewis answered back with a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.
Kendyl Strack (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston) drove in Taylor with a ground out to short and
Cori Reynolds (Lansing, Ill./TF South) delivered a pinch hit double to right to drive in
Emily Espinosa (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) with the final run.
That would be all the support
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley) needed as she held the Truman lineup to just five hits and the two unearned runs in the complete game effort. She struck out four and didn't walk a batter to improve to 12-8.
The Flyers outhit the Bulldogs 10-5 in the nightcap with DeMasi, Sanders and Strack contributing two hits each in the attack. Prieto, Taylor, Shaw and Reynolds added a hit each.
Game 1 – Truman State 9, Lewis 0 six innings
Truman scored in every inning but the fifth in the opening game of the doubleheader. The 'Dogs scored three runs in the first highlighted by a two-run single from Christa Reisinger and a double steal by Reisinger and Morgan McMahan.
Truman added to its lead with single runs in the second and third inning. Ashley Murphey homered to right in the second and McMahan homered to center in the third. Reisinger drove in her third run of the game with a single in the fourth and later in the inning McMahan drove in Reisinger with her second RBI of the contest.
The Bulldogs closed out the game with a two-out rally in the sixth. Murphy singled to left and scored on Alyssa Rivera's two-run homer to right center.
Truman outhit Lewis 12-5 in the opener. Taylor led the Flyers with two hits in the contest while Prieto,
Lauren Brennan (Cantonment, Fla./J.M. Tate) and
Jessica Lofthouse (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) had a hit each. Shaw suffered the loss in the opener to fall to 6-7.
Lewis plays its final road games of the 2018 season on Sunday traveling to Quincy to take on the Hawks in a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
