QUINCY, Ill. – The Lewis Flyer softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader at Quincy on Sunday afternoon at the Mart Heinen Complex in Quincy, Ill. The Flyers (18-24, 7-17 GLVC) dropped the opener 9-8 and the nightcap 4-2.
Game 1 – Quincy 9, Lewis 8
Lewis trailed 4-0 after four innings in the opener giving up a pair of runs in the second and fourth innings. The Flyers rallied in the fifth sending nine batters to the plate scoring six times on four hits.
Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) tied the game with a grand slam then two batters later
Cierra Taylor (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) hit a two-run homer to put Lewis in front 6-4.
The Flyers added to their lead with two more runs in the sixth on a RBI double from
Lauren Brennan (Cantonment, Fla./J.M. Tate) and a RBI single from Prieto. The Hawks (21-23, 9-15 GLVC) responded with three runs in their half of the sixth highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Raigen Schwartz. Quincy won the game in its final at-bat on a two-run walk-off homer off the bat of Remi Ferguson.
Lewis had eight hits in the opener led by Prieto and Taylor with two hits each. Brennan,
Dara Sanders (Crestwood, Ill./Mother McAuley),
Morgan Weber (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) and
Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) had a hit each. Sanders pitched the first six innings allowing seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Cassie Shaw (Moline, Ill./Moline) took the loss allowing two runs on two hits in 0.1 inning of work.
Game 2 – Quincy 4, Lewis 2
The Hawks scored first in the nightcap with a run in the third inning. With two outs in the inning, Katelyn Gratza tripled to right center and scored on Schwartz's single to left. Quincy added to its lead with three runs in the fourth. Megan Sharpshair led off the inning with a home run then Ferguson and Kylie Powers followed with back-to-back doubles. Gratza drove in the third run of the inning with a two-out double.
The Flyers were held to just one hit through six innings before breaking through in the seventh.
Cori Reynolds (Lansing, Ill./TF South) reached on an error by the third baseman to lead off the inning. With two outs, Brennan hit her a second home run of the season to cut the lead in half.
Kendyl Strack (Genoa, Ill./Genoa-Kingston) followed with a single to center to bring the tying run to the plate, but
Alise Perna (Naperville, Ill./Metea Valley) struck out swinging to end the game.
Weber, Brennan and Strack each had hits in the contest.
Taylor Boelte (Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) got the start in game two allowing four runs on six hits in four innings pitched.
The Flyers begin an eight-game homestand on Tuesday hosting Wisconsin-Parkside in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. at the Lewis Softball Field.
