ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The eighth ranked Lewis men's volleyball team dropped a top 10 matchup against fifth ranked Pepperdine 3-1 on Saturday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The loss snapped the Flyers (5-2) four match winning streak.

Lewis finished the match with a hitting percentage of .244 (48 kills-17 errors-127 total attacks). Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) had a match and season-high 18 kills while Michael Simmons (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) matched his career-high with 17 digs and Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) dished out 41 assists.

The Flyers trailed by two in the opening set before the Waves (5-1) began to pull away with an 8-4 run to grab an 18-12 lead after a kill from David Wieczorek. Lewis wouldn't get closer than five points the rest of the set as Pepperdine went on to win the opener 25-18.

The Flyers were held to a .143 hitting percentage in the stanza while the Waves hit .333 and had a pair of aces.

Lewis trailed by as many as six points midway through set two but responded with an 8-2 run to even the frame at 18 on a kill from TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington HS). Pepperdine answered that run getting back-to-back kills from Michael Wexter and Kaleb Denmark to regain a two-point advantage.

The two sides exchanged the next 10 points and it was the Flyers who were the first to reach set point after an ace from Kyle Bugee (Cupertino, CA/Homestead) made it 24-23. The Waves extended the set getting a kill from Kevin Vaz but back-to-back attack errors by Pepperdine gave Lewis set two 26-24.

In the swing set, the Flyers trailed by five midway through but again made a late rally to even the set at 23 on a service error from Wieczorek. However, Lewis was unable to pull out the set as Denmark knocked down a kill and an attack error by Julian Moses (Atlanta, GA/Atlanta International School) gave set three to the Waves 25-23.

The Flyers fell behind by four points in set four but were able to trim the deficit to 17-15 on a kill from Coenen. Pepperdine then proceeded to score seven of the next 10 points to get to match point on a block from Vaz. Bugee extended the match momentarily with a kill before Wieczorek ended it with a kill.

The Waves ended the match hitting .336 (65-19-137) and had four players reach double figures in kills. Denmark and Wieczorek led the way with 16 each while Wexter added 15 and Vaz finished with 13. Robert Mullahey had 49 assists and Noah Dyer finished with 18 digs.

Lewis heads to California next weekend for a pair of matches beginning on Friday at UC Santa Barbara at 9 p.m. (CT).
