No. 10 Lewis Men’s Volleyball Defeats Purdue Fort Wayne For Fourth Straight Win

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The 10th ranked Lewis men's volleyball team made it four in a row sweeping Purdue Fort Wayne (25-16, 25-16, 25-20) on Saturday (Feb. 16) evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 11-4 overall and 4-0 in MIVA action while the Mastodons fall to 8-7, 2-2 in MIVA.

Lewis outhit Purdue Fort Wayne in the match .403 to .123. Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) led the Flyers with 10 kills while Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) added nine kills. Julian Moses (Atlanta, GA/Atlanta International School) and Kyle Bugée had six kills apiece. Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) had 28 assists and five service aces in the match. Jake Walenga (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln-Way North) finished with five digs.

Lewis never trailed in the opening set leading by as many as eight points in the set. The Flyers hit .407 in the stanza with 15 kills against four errors in 27 total attacks. Mitchem had four kills in the frame to lead the way.

Lewis scored the first four points of set two and seven of the first eight on its way to the win. The Mastodons got as close as four multiple times in the frame but were never able to get closer as the Flyers ended the set on an 11-6 run to take the 2-0 lead.

Lewis stormed out to an early lead in the final set but Purdue Fort Wayne eventually came back to take the lead at 12-11 on a kill by Richie Diedrich. The two sides swapped the next 11 points and were tied at 17 when the Flyers gained some separation thanks to three straight points. The Mastadons cut the lead to two but Lewis was able to close it out scoring five of the final seven points.

Lewis plays its next five matches on the road beginning next Thursday at Ohio State at 6 p.m. (CST).
