ST. CHARLES, Mo. – No. 10 Lewis men's volleyball out-hit Lindenwood .395 to .161 on Friday (Feb. 8) evening in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-22) sweep at Lindenwood. The match was the conference opener for both clubs.
Kyle Bugee (Cupertino, CA/Homestead) hit .611 with 12 kills and an ace, while
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) hit .364 with 11 kills, four digs and two blocks.
The Flyers put set one away with a 7-2 run midway through the frame to go up 17-9. Bugee and Coenen each had two kills in the run.
Lewis built an early six point lead and never looked back on its way to the 25-16 victory. Bugee had five kills in the frame while
Julian Moses (Atlanta, GA/Atlanta International School) and
TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington HS) had two kills each.
The Flyers led by as many as five in set three but the Lions came back to even things at 14. Lewis pulled back ahead with an 8-5 run to go up 22-19 on an attack error by Charley Hlavin. Coenen set Lewis up with match point with his 10th kill of the contest but Lindenwood momentarily extended the match with a kill from Phil Swartz. Coenen then ended the match with his sixth kill of the set.
Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) recorded a double-double with 32 assists and 12 digs as Lewis held a 33-25 edge in digs.
The Lions fall to 4-7, 0-1 MIVA while the Flyers improve to 7-4 and 1-0 in league play.
Lewis is back in action on Saturday traveling to Quincy to take on the Hawks. First serve in Quincy is set for 7 p.m.
