ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The seventh ranked Lewis men's volleyball team extended its winning streak to 10 straight with a 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 26-24, 25-19) win over No. 11 Loyola Chicago on Friday night at Neil Carey Arena. With the win the Flyers improve to 17-4 overall and 8-0 in MIVA play while the Ramblers fall to 13-7, 6-2 MIVA and dropped their fourth straight match.
Lewis led wire-to-wire in the opening set hitting .439 with 21 kills against three errors in 41 total attacks. The Flyers led by as many as five points early but LUC closed to within 9-8 on a kill from Paul Narup. Lewis extended its lead back to five with four straight points and wouldn't allow the Ramblers to get closer than three points the rest of the set as they went onto win 25-19.
The Flyers held a 17-13 in the second set but Loyola Chicago ran off six straight points to grab a 19-17 lead after a kill from Will Tischler. Lewis got back-to-back kills from
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) and
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) to even things at 19. The two sides swapped points and were still tied at 21 when the Ramblers seized control scoring three straight points to grab a 24-21 lead. The Flyers fought off two set points but couldn't fight off a third as Collin Mahan knocked down a kill to give LUC the 25-23 victory.
Lewis trailed for a majority of set three and were down 23-19 when it began to make its comeback.
Julian Moses (Atlanta, GA/Atlanta International School) started the rally with back-to-back kills and then
Jake Walenga (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln-Way North) added back-to-back kills to even the set at 23. An error by Paul Narup gave the Flyers a 24-23 lead but the Ramblers answered on the next point getting a kill from Tischler to even things back up. Moses gave Lewis the lead back with a kill and then an error by Mahan gave the Flyers the win 26-24.
Lewis raced out to a big lead in the fourth set and never looked back on its way to a 25-19 victory. It led by as many as eight points in the set but LUC made things interesting scoring three straight points to get within five. Mitchem then added the match with his 12th kill to secure the victory.
The Flyers outhit the Ramblers in the match .320-to-.250 and recorded 58 kills to 53. Moses led the way with 16 kills while Coenen added 13 and Mitchem was also in double figures.
Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) had a match-high 46 digs while
Michael Simmons (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) recorded a match-high 13 digs.
Tischler led all players with 17 kills and was joined in double figures by Mahan with 16 kills while Dane Leclair had 10 kills. Garret Zolg distributed 43 assists and Avery Aylsworth recorded 12 digs.
Lewis begins its final roadtrip of the season next Thursday as it travels to Fort Wayne, Ind., to take on the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons at 6 p.m. (CDT).
