ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's tennis team clinched second place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference's East Division with a 4-3 win at Southern Indiana on Friday (April 12). With the win the Flyers improve to 9-4 on the season and 4-1 in the GLVC while the Screaming Eagles fall to 10-11 overall and 2-2 in the GLVC.
USI opened the dual by taking two of the three doubles matches to win the opening point.
Alan Braschinsky (Tallinn, Estonia/Milna Harma) and
Oskar Lusti (Tallinn, Estonia/), ranked No. 11 nationally in doubles, won their match over Parker Collignon and Martin Linares 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles
David Ambrozic (Portoroz, Slovenia) and
Brendan Peterson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) fell to Ilia Karelin and Marvin Kromer 6-2.
Anton Levitin (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) and
Pedja Trifunovic () lost to Spencer Blandford and Kooper Falkenstein at No. 3 doubles 7-6 (7-2).
Braschinsky, ranked No. 51 nationally drew Lewis even with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Collignon at No. 1 singles. Lusti gave the Flyers the lead downing Karelin 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. The Screaming Eagles retook the lead at 3-2 with wins at No. 5 and No. 3 singles.
Chandler Stimpert (Graceland, Ill./Morton) fell to Linares in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 and Ambrozic dropped a straight sets decision to Kromer 6-2, 6-4. Trifunovic defeated Blandford at No. 4 singles in three sets. He won the opening set 6-3, lost the second set 6-7 (16-18) and then won the third set 6-2. The match came down to No. 6 singles and Peterson had to rally from a set down to defeat Falkenstein 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) to secure the win for Lewis.
The Flyers are back in action on Saturday taking on Alabama-Huntsville at 12 p.m. in Huntsville, Ala.
