INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The No. 48 Lewis men's tennis team edged Maryville 4-3 to advance to the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon at the University Tennis Center in Indianapolis, Ind. The Flyers improve to 10-4 on the season while the Saints fall to 8-8.
Lewis grabbed the 1-0 lead winning two of the three doubles matches.
David Ambrozic (Portoroz, Slovenia) and
Brendan Peterson (Elmhurst, Ill./York) won at No. 2 doubles over Bodin Aleksic and Juan Segura 7-5.
Anton Levitin (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove) and
Pedja Trifunovic () beat Fernando Orea and Erik Aarthun 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Alan Braschinsky (Tallinn, Estonia/Milna Harma) and
Oskar Lusti (Tallinn, Estonia/) were trailing at No. 1 doubles when the match was halted due to Lewis winning the doubles point.
Braschinsky defeated Louis Glaves in three sets 6-3, 6-7 (6-8) and 7-5 at No. 1 singles. Trifunovic followed with a straight sets win over Orea 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles to give the Flyers a 3-0 lead in the match.
Maryville came back to win the next three matches beginning with Segura's win over Ambrozic 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 at No. 3 singles. Lusti lost to Jack Beuttell-Triggs at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-3. Aleksic beat Stimpert 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
It came down to No. 6 singles with Peterson rallying from a set down to defeat Donovan McKnight 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the win for Lewis.
The Flyers will take on Drury in the semifinals on Saturday at the University Tennis Center at 12 p.m. (CST).
