ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The No. 7 Lewis men's volleyball team swept Quincy to clinch a share of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and the No. 1 seed in the MIVA Postseason Tournament on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 21-5 overall and 12-1 in MIVA play while the Hawks fall to 5-21, 0-13 MIVA.
Lewis recorded 39 kills in the contest and outhit Quincy .389-to-.121.
Julian Moses (Atlanta, GA/Atlanta International School) led the way with 12 kills while
Mitch Perinar (Channahon, IL/Minooka) added 10 kills.
Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, CA/Adolfo Camarillo) distributed 34 assists and had four aces.
Michael Simmons (Aurora, IL/Waubonsie Valley) finished with a match-high 10 digs.
The Flyers used a 9-4 run early in set one to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 13-9 lead after a kill from Moses. The Hawks closed the deficit to two on four different occasions but Lewis was able to pull away thanks to an 8-2 run to build its largest lead of the set at 24-16 on back-to-back aces from
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS). A kill from Omari Wheeler extended the set briefly before Perinar ended it with a kill to give the Flyers the 25-17 set win.
Lewis took control early in the middle set thanks to a 5-0 run and wouldn't look back on its way to the 25-13 victory. The Flyers hit .500 (14 kills-3 errors-22 total attacks) in the stanza and was led by Moses and Perinar with four kills each while Mitchem added three kills.
Lewis led wire-to-wire in the final set scoring the first three points of the frame and never allowed the Hawks get closer than one point. The Flyers pulled away with a 7-2 surge to extend its three-point lead to 19-11 on a kill from Mitchem. The lead eventually grew to 11 as Lewis would go onto win the set 25-15.
Wheeler led Quincy with 11 kills while Adam Rogan had 17 assists and Stevie Bresser and Noam Hannoun had five digs apiece.
The Flyers conclude the regular season on Saturday hosting Lindenwood at 7 p.m. The team will honor Moses, Yoshimoto and Simmons prior to the match as part of Senior Weekend festivities.
