SAN DIEGO – Lewis' sixth ranked men's volleyball team picked up its second straight win on Saturday evening sweeping UC San Diego at RIMAC Arena in San Diego. The Flyers improve to 3-1 on the season while the Tritons fall to 1-1.
Lewis used a 9-2 run early in the opening set to turn a one-point deficit into a 14-8 advantage.
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS),
Kyle Bugée (Cupertino, CA, Homestead) and
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin) each had a kill while Bugée and Mitchem added two blocks apiece in the run.
The Flyers extended their lead to 17-10 but UCSD made a late run cutting the lead to 23-21 on a triple block by Collin Shannon, Shane Benetz and Kyle McCauley. Lewis fought off the run winning the set 25-22 on Coenen's fifth kill of the set.
The two sides went back and forth in the second set before the Flyers seized control with an 8-2 run to take an 18-11 lead. The Tritons once again mounted a late rally getting to within four but Lewis held on to win 25-20 on a service error from McCauley.
The Flyers used a late run in set three to break it open building a six-point lead at 24-18 on a kill from
Dalen Instenes (Racine, WI/William Horlick). UCSD fought off the first match point but not the second when
Ryan Van Loo (Burbank, CA/John Burroughs) stuffed Connor Walbrecht at the net to end the match.
Lewis hit .303 (34 kills-11 errors-76 attempts) in the match and was led by Coenen with 13 kills and seven digs.
Kevin Kauling (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) had 24 assists.
The Tritons were held to a .156 (30 kills-18-errors-77 attempts) attack percentage and were led by McCauley who finished with a match-high 17 kills. Walbrecht had 28 assists while McCauley and Ryan Lew had six digs each.
The Flyers return to Neil Carey Arena on Friday evening hosting top ranked Hawaii at 7 p.m.
