ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's seventh ranked men's volleyball team swept past Urbana on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 4-3 while the Blue Knights fall to 0-7.
Lewis used an 11-6 run in the opening set to break a 7-all tie.
Cole Brillhart (York, Pa./Northeastern) had two kills while
Joe Kenzinger (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) had a kill and an ace in the run. Urbana cut the deficit to three but the Flyers closed it out scoring seven of the final nine points of the stanza to win 25-17.
Lewis hit .348 in the opening frame while holding the Blue Knights to a .143 attack percentage.
The Flyers dominated the second set racing out to an early five-point lead and would never look back. The lead grew to as many as 13 points in the stanza.
Auston Bonté (Maryland Heights, Mo.,/Pattonville) had four kills in the set while
Antonio Elias Rodriguez (Naranjito, Puerto Rico/Colegio Sagrada Familia) added three more.
Lewis hit .600 in the frame and held Urbana's offense to .038 hitting percentage.
The third set featured 14 ties and nine lead changes. The Blue Knights led 15-11 midway through the set before the Flyers went on an 8-2 run to grab a 19-17 advantage. Urbana regained the lead at 23-22 when Liam Morrissey and Kurt Klamfoth blocked
Colin McClintic (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East).
Lewis scored back-to-back points to get to match point but the Blue Knights staved off the first match point on a kill from Jack Brinkman.
Jackson Hickman (Phoenix, Ariz./Boulder Creek) gave the Flyers a second match point with a kill and then Hickman sealed the match stuffing Morrissey at the net for the 26-24 victory.
Hickman,
Jacob Kerschner (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) and
Davon Lampkin (San Diego, Cali./Madison High School) combined for 15 of Lewis' 16 kills in the set. The Flyers hit .297 in the final stanza while Urbana hit .250 in the stanza.
Hickman led Lewis with seven kills in the contest while Bonté added six kills and
Iñaki Bustamante (Redondo Beach, Calif.,/Redondo Union) tallied five kills.
Ryan Van Loo (Burbank, CA/John Burroughs) dished out 31 assists and
Jason Gibbs (Bellaire, Texas/Bellarie) finished with six digs.
The Flyers hit .373 (38 kills-10 errors-75 total attacks) for the contest.
Morrissey finished with a match-high 10 kills while Brinkman added nine kills to lead the Blue Knights. Chaz Hafer handed out 24 assists and Brinkman had six digs.
Urbana had an attack percentage of .157 (31 kills-18 errors-83 total attacks) for the match.
Lewis concludes its four match homestand on Saturday hosting the University of Charleston (W.V.) at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles lost to No. 15 Loyola-Chicago in four sets on Friday evening.
