ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The No. 6 ranked Lewis University men's volleyball team opened its 2020 season with a 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-14) sweep over King Friday night at Neil Carey Arena. King fell to 0-2 on the season as Lewis starts the season 1-0.
The Flyers came out of the gates strong, scoring the first four points of the match and went on another four-point run shortly after to take a 10-3 lead as back-to-back kills by
TJ Murray (Barrington, IL/Barrington HS) finished off the run. Lewis added a third four-point run to extend its lead to 15-5 and were able to continue building the lead from there.
In the second set King scored the first point of the set but Lewis quickly answered with seven straight to take control behind three kills, an ace and three King errors. For the second straight set the Flyers did not allow King to record back-to-back points.
The Tornado opened the third set with a 3-1 advantage before four straight points from the Flyers. It was a 13-10 game when the Flyers broke it open with six straight points and 11 of 12, thanks to four straight service aces from Kyle Bugee.
Lewis hit an impressive .614 (42 kills, 7 errors, 57 total attacks) for the match. It's the highest hitting percentage in a match in school history since 2005.
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) led the Flyers with 11 kills and a .692 hitting percentage (11-2-13). Bugee added eight kills, a .500 hitting percentage (8-2-12) and four aces.
Kevin Kauling (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley)Â recorded 29 assists,
Ryan Coenen (Franklin, WI/Franklin)Â notched seven kills with a .600 hitting percentage (7-1-10), Murray had six kills with a .857 hitting percentage (6-0-7) and
Marty Jepsen (Chicago, Ill./Marist High School)Â led the team with six digs.
Lewis is back in action Saturday at 7 p.m. when it hosts No. 3 BYU.
