Lewis Women's Bowling Earns Four Top-11 Wins, Takes Third At Penguin Classic

Johnson places fourth individually for fourth All-Tournament Team honor

STRUTHERS, Oh. - The Lewis University women's bowling team placed third Sunday (Oct. 17) at the Penguin Classic, hosted by Youngstown State University at Holiday Bowl. The Flyers went 10-3 for the weekend, earning the best record among all contestants, while picking up four wins against the top 11 teams in the country, according to the National Tenpin Coaches Association Poll.

Lewis (10-3) came out of the gates fast Friday, opening their five - five game baker matches with a 1,012-892 win over No. 7 and Final Four contestant from last year Youngstown State. The Flyers followed that with a 907-906 win over No. 3 Arkansas State, who competed for the NCAA championship a year ago. They made it three straight wins over NCAA Tournament teams from last year with a 972-808 win over Medaille. 

The Flyers finished the day with wins over Walsh (950-894) and Morgan State (913-851) and were in second place after the first day with a 4,752 total.

On day two, which were five traditional matches, the Flyers went 3-2. They opened with a 1,048-1,038 win over Youngstown State. That was followed with a win over Saint Francis (PA) 890-875 before losses to No. 11 Duquesne 934-888 and Valparaiso 996-977 before rebounding to beat Mercyhurst 974-915. They finished the day in third place with 9,529 pins to place third heading into bracket play.

Lewis opened up bracket play with a 4.5-2.5 loss to Duquesne (207-207, 163-210, 194-187, 168-257, 159-221, 193-170, 191-198). The Flyers came back to beat Morgan State 4-0 (178-139, 199-158, 178-145, 200-174) and won the third place match over Duquesne (200-217, 242-195, 246-187, 171-226, 193-209, 212-195, 205-182). 

Arkansas State won the tournament with Youngstown State taking second. The Flyers averaged 191.6 for the tournament.

Individually the Flyers were led by Kylie Johnson (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere North), who shot a 1,075 over five games to place fourth to make her fourth All-Tournament Team. DeAlani Fishbeck (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) shot a 1,014 to place eighth, Jenna Sussenbach (Naperville, Ill./Plainfield North) placed 16th with a 964 and Kayla Dench (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East) was 25th with a 906. Erica Lohr (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) added a 356 in two games, Alyson Young (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) shot a 166 game, Kelsey Olson (South Beloit, ILL./Hononegah) had a 159 game and Savanna Jourdan (Oswego, ILL./Oswego) recorded a 137 game.

The Flyers are back in action Friday at the Bearcat Open, hosted by McKendree University, at St. Clair Bowl in Fairview Heights, Ill.
