DYER, Ind. - The Lewis University women's bowling team placed second Sunday (Oct. 31) at the Valpo Bowling Classic at Stardust Bowl III. The Flyers went 7-4 for the weekend, picking up two more top 25 wins to give them eight on the season.
The Flyers (22-15) opened Friday's five baker matches with losses to Kentucky Wesleyan (961-900) and Drury (870-829) before responding with three wins to finish the day over Dominican (957-655), Upper Iowa (878-786) and No. 18 Lincoln Memorial (929-850).Â
In Saturday's traditional play Lewis defeated Mercyhurst 908-882, beat Spalding 935-801, fell to No. 24 Marian 854-828 and defeated Valparaiso 929-912. It edged out Tusculum by one pin through two days 9,009-9,008 to finish qualifying in second place heading into Sunday.
That matched the Flyers with top seed and No. 17 ranked Central Missouri in the first round of bracket play and the Flyers won 4-0 (183-166, 175-173, 223-138, 188-174), earning their first-ever win over the Jennies (1-8 overall). That earned them a bye into the championship match, where they faced Lincoln Memorial for the title. The Railsplitters won the match 4.5-1.5 (232-159, 191-190, 181-135, 161-161, 191-208, 195-190).
The Flyers were led by
Kayla Dench (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East), who made the All-Tournament Team with a fourth-place finish after shooting a 1,019 for five games, and
Kylie Johnson (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere North), who added a 998 to place sixth overall.
Kelsey Olson (South Beloit, ILL./Hononegah) added a 702 in four games,
Jenna Sussenbach (Naperville, Ill./Plainfield North) shot a 691 in four games,
Savanna Jourdan (Oswego, ILL./Oswego) had a 687 in four games,
DeAlani Fishbeck (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) rolled a 301 in two games and
Erica Lohr (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) added a 149 game.
Lewis has a week off before finishing the first semester at the Ladyjack Classic, beginning Nov. 12 in Kenosha, Wis.
