Lewis Women's Basketball Falls To Indianapolis 79-67 In GLVC Opener

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Lewis University women's basketball team fell to Indianapolis 79-67 Thursday (Dec. 2) in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers drop to 1-6 overall, 0-1 in the GLVC, while the Greyhounds improve to 2-5 overall, 1-1 in the GLVC.

The Flyers got off to a quick start with the first four points of the game and grabbed an 8-2 advantage after a Lily Courier (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) fastbreak layup just over three minutes into the game. The lead grew to eight points at 13-5 with a conventional three-point play by Amelia Motz (Canton, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) with 4:48 remaining in the quarter.

However, the Greyhounds responded with a 13-2 run to move ahead 18-15 at the 1:46 mark and led 18-16 after the first quarter.

Lewis regained the lead at 20-18 after baskets by Kathryn Schmidt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central) and Shawnton Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) to open the second quarter. Indianapolis regained the lead back and slowly built its advantage to as many as seven points at 33-26 with 1:33 remaining in the half before the Flyers cut the deficit to 34-31 at the half.

The Flyers opened the third quarter on a 7-1 spurt behind five points from Courier to take a 38-34 lead. They led 51-46 late in the third quarter before the Greyhounds scored the final six points of the quarter to take a 52-51 advantage into the fourth.

Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer to put the Flyers back on top and the teams exchanged leads for the first half of the fourth quarter. Another Hart three-pointer put Lewis ahead for the final time at 67-64 with 4:29 remaining. From there the Greyhounds scored the final 15 points of the game to pull away.

Lewis was led by Motz and Grace Hilber (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) (5 assists), who scored 13 points each. Schmidt added 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Hart scored 11 points and Courier and Brown tallied nine points each. The Flyers shot 25-of-64 (39.1 percent) from the floor, while the Greyhounds were 28-of-57 (49.1 percent) from the floor.
