Flyers Sweep Dual Meet With Valparaiso

Women win 171.5-88.5 while the men cruise 192-70.

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's men's and women's swimming teams swept its dual against Valparaiso inside the Lewis Pool on Saturday (Dec. 4) with the men winning 192-70 and the women winning 171.5-88.5.

The Flyer women won 11 of the 14 events in the dual while the men took 13 of the 14 events.

Larissa Alves (Panama/) and Erin Bachmeier (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) each picked up two individual events while Bachmeier was also apart of two winning relays and Alves was a member of one.
Alves and Bachmeier contributed to the Flyers 200 medley relay win to start the meet. Alves swam the opening backstroke portion in a time of 30.88. and then handed it off to Bachmeier who swam the breaststroke portion in a time of 29.31 seconds. Cetta Senese (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) and Daniela Navarrete (Panama City, Panama/) rounded out the relay swimming the final two legs as Lewis won with a time of 1:53.20.

Alves picked up her second event of the win of the afternoon winning the 100 back in a time of 1:03.84 and later in the meet won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:16.27.

Bachmeier was the winner in the 100 breast finishing with a time of 1:07.76 and she also won the 50 free in a time of 25.47 seconds. Bachmeier swam the anchor leg of the 400 free relay and teamed up with
Benita Varanauskaite (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates), Aubrey Fischer (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence) and Navarrete to win in a time of 3:47.88.

Kiara Barnes (Cape Town, South Africa/) picked up the win in the 1000 free with a time of 11:10.59, Varanauskaite was the winner in the 200 free in a time of 2:04.33 by over a second. Fischer won the 200 fly with a time of 2:21.45, Lanie Patterson picked up the win in the 200 breaststroke at 2:38.33 and Senese won the 100 fly in a time of 1:01.91.

On the men's side, Ruben van Leeuwen (Eindhoven, The Netherlands/CIU/Christelyk Lyceum Veenendaal), Ari Kissel (Berlin, Germany/) and Jackson Mugg (Cheyenne, Wyoming/Cheyenne East) each won two individual events. van Leeuwen swam the anchor leg on Lewis' 400 free relay team that won the event and Kissel swam the anchor portion of the 200 medley relay to open the meet.

The team of Miguel Turcios (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Canterbury School), Rhys Taylor (Nottingham, England/National C of E Academy), Carter Thoss (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) and Kissel posted a time of 1:35.46 in the first men's race of the dual. Kissel also won the 100 backstroke and 100 free in times of 52.48 seconds and 46.72 seconds respectively.

van Leeuwen won his first event of the afternoon taking the top spot in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.20 and in the 50 free in a time of 21.32. He swam the anchor leg of the 400 free relay and teamed up with Erik Fosen (Joliet, Ill./), Ethan Fox (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) and Adrian Wlodarz (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) to win the relay with a time of 3:11.21.

Mugg was the winner in the 200 backstroke posting a time of 1:59.19 and later in the meet won the 500 free with a time of 4:50.67.

Also posting event wins on Saturday were Mariano Sosa (Olavarria, Argentina/) in the 1000 free in a time of 9:58.80, Filip Bjorkhom won the 200 fly with a time of 1:59.18, Matthew Senese (Joliet, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) was the winner in the 200 breaststroke at 2:14.42, Thoss won the 100 fly in a time of 52.65 and Turcios was the winner in the 200 individual medley at 1:56.94.

The Flyers return to the pool on Friday (Jan. 14) as they travel to Chicago to take on the University of Chicago in a dual meet beginning at 6 p.m.
