St. Louis, Mo. – The Lewis University men's soccer team fell to Missouri-St. Louis 1-0 Friday (Feb. 26) in the season opener for both teams at Lou Fusz Stadium. The Tritons move to 1-0 overall and in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with the win, while the Flyers fall to 0-1 overall and in the GLVC.
The lone goal of the game came at the 34:06 mark when Missouri St. Louis' Leo Sowa found the upper left portion of the net on an assist from Garrett Bass to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Lewis came back with a pair of shots on goal in the final five minutes of the half, but shots by
Domenic Baumann (Bergheim, Germany/Brauweiler) and
Matthew Beaulieu (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) were both saved.
The Flyers made a rally in the 83
rd minute of the contest as a shot by
Abdul Ganiyu-Iddrisu (Accra, Ghana/Eastern Florida State College) was saved, leading to a corner kick and then a throw in, but the Flyers were unable to get another shot off.
Lewis outshot the Tritons 4-0 in the second half and had the only two corners of the half. For the game Lewis had a 7-2 shot advantage with a 3-2 shots on goal edge.
Jimmy Mwanga (Dublin, Ireland/CBS Lucan) led Lewis with three shots.
The Flyers are back on the pitch Sunday (Feb. 28) when they travel to McKendree for a 2:30 p.m. showdown.
