KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Lewis University women's basketball team fell at No. 24 Truman State 83-74 Saturday (Feb.6) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game. The Flyers fall to 9-6 overall and in the GLVC, while Truman State moves to 12-3 overall and in the conference.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Lewis got on the board with a
Kathryn Schmidt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central) three-pointer.
Grace Hilber (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) and
Jenna Badali (Oak Lawn, Ill./Mother McAuley) also hit early three-pointers, but the Bulldogs matched the Flyers shot-for-shot and led 21-15 after the first quarter.
Five straight points from Hilber to open the second quarter got Lewis to within a point at 21-20 and then she gave the Flyers their first lead of the game at 28-26 on a jumper with 4:26 left in the half. The Flyers then went on a 7-0 run behind four points from
Jayla Turchin (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) to take a 35-28 lead. They would go on to lead 37-34 at the half.
A third Hilber three-pointer extended the Lewis lead to 42-36 early in the third quarter, but Truman quickly tied the game at 42-42 just a minute later. Another Lewis 7-0 run later in the period opened up a 55-48 advantage with 4:13 left in the third as the Flyers would take a 63-58 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to take a 64-63 lead with 8:20 left in the game. Lewis regained a four-point lead on multiple occasions, the latest at the 4:26 mark when a
Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) jumper gave it a 74-70 lead. But Truman responded with the final 13 points of the game to pull away.
Hilber led the Flyers with 21 points, while Badali added 12 points and seven steals, Schmidt had 10 points and Hart contributed nine points and eight boards. The Flyers shot 41.4 percent (29-of-70) from the floor, while Truman was 59.3 percent (32-of-54). Truman had 23 turnovers for the game to 17 for the Flyers, while Lewis had 13 steals in the contest.
Lewis continues on the road Monday (Feb. 8) when it travels to take on Rockhurst at 1 p.m.
