ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis' baseball team extended its winning streak to four with a 7-4 win over crosstown rival St. Francis on Thursday afternoon at Brennan Field. The Flyers improve to 19-14 on the season while the Fighting Saints drop to 19-17.
Lewis opened the game with five of its first six hitters reaching safely.
Anthony Cavalieri (Western Springs, Ill./Fenwick) started the inning with a one out single to left and scored on
Michael O'Brien's (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) opposite field two-run homer to right.
Jackson Dvorak (New Lenox, Ill./Providence Catholic) singled and
Julian Everett (Frankfort, Ill/Lincoln Way East) walked to put runners at first and second for
Anthony Rios (Lemont, Ill./St. Laurence). Rios drove in Dvorak with a double off the right field wall to make it 3-0.
Austin Tittle (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) lined a sacrifice fly to center to score Everett with the final run of the inning.
St. Francis answered with three runs in the second highlighted by Joe McGuire's two-run homer to right. Luke Ketchum drove in the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Flyers added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend their lead to 6-3. Dvorak walked with the bases loaded in the fourth scoring
Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly). In the fifth inning, Rios led off the inning with a walk and went to third on Tittle's double down the left field line.
Max Warren (Yorkville, Ill./Yorkville) drove in Rios with a fielder's choice to short as
Dru Jasnoch (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township), running for Tittle, was thrown out at third.
The Saints got one of those runs back in the seventh as Josh Kirnbauer scored on an error by
Patrick Keaty (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) that would've ended the inning.
Lewis answered right back in its half of the seventh.
Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) led off the inning with a double down the right field line and scored on Warren's single to left center.
The Flyer bullpen nailed down the win allowing just an unearned run on three hits over the final four innings.
Matt Verdun (Homer Glen, Ill./St. Rita) and
Jake Lotz (Palos Hills, Ill./St. Laurence) combined to strike out the last five batters with Lotz striking out the side in the ninth.
Lewis had 11 hits in the contest and were led by Cavalieri and Keaty with two hits apiece. O'Brien and Warren drove in two runs each.
Brad Littleton (Coal City, Ill./) got the start allowing three runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and three walks in five innings pitched to improve to 6-4 on the season.
The Flyers return to the diamond on Saturday as they travel to Crestwood, Ill., to take on Roosevelt at 1 p.m. in a single game.
