BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Lewis University's 25th ranked men's swimming team swept its tri-meet at Olivet Nazarene on Saturday in Bourbonnais, Ill. The Flyers knocked off the host Tigers 194-78 and Davenport 185-76.
The Flyers won 12 of the 15 events in the tri and were led by
Ari Kissel (Berlin, Germany/) who recorded three individual event wins and was member of the winning 200 free relay.
Jackson Mugg (Cheyenne, Wyoming/Cheyenne East),
Rhys Taylor (Nottingham, England/National C of E Academy) and
Miguel Turcios (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Canterbury School) each won two events while
Filip Bjorkholm (Västerås, Sweden/Widenska) and
Mariano Sosa (Olavarria, Argentina/) won one event apiece.
Lewis opened the meet with a second place finish in the 200 medley relay as the quartet of Sosa, Taylor,
Carter Thoss (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) and
Ethan Fox (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) finished in a time of 1:37.41.
Mugg and
Isaac Rolfsen (Kalamazoo, Mich./Homeschool) finished first and second in the 1650 free with times of 16:45.24 and 17:03.18 respectively.
Kissel picked up his first individual win in the 200 free with a time of 1:43.76. He was joined by
Brock Star (Grandville, Mich./Grandville),
Russell Smith (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and
Michael Roach (New Market, Maryland/Linganore) who finished fourth, fifth and eighth with times of 1:48.09, 1:49.51 and 1:51.73 respectively.
The Flyers took three of the top five spots in the 100 back with Turcios posting a winning time of 53.22 seconds and he was followed by Sosa who finished second at 53.45 seconds and
Kevin Soltys (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) was fifth in a time of 54.47 seconds.
Taylor won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 55.52 seconds. His time was good enough for a "B" standard qualifying mark for the national meet.
Matthew Senese (Joliet, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) was third at 1:00.51,
Jabari Ramsey (Land O' Lakes, Fla./Land O' Lakes) finished fifth at 1:02.50 and
Alec Danko (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) was sixth in a time of 1:02.51.
Kissel added his second event of the day in the 50 free with a winning time of 21.75 seconds. He was joined by Fox who finished fifth at 22.85 seconds while
Russell Smith (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) took eighth at 23.04 seconds.
Kissel completed the sweep in the sprint freestyle races winning the 100 free in a time of 47.09 seconds. Turcios took third in the race with a time of 48.18 seconds while Star was fifth at 49.04 seconds.
Sosa picked up his first event win in the 200 backstroke finishing in a time of 1:54.28 while Soltys was third at 2:00.56 and Roach finished seventh at 2:07.65.
Taylor swept the breaststroke events winning the 200 breast in a time of 2:09.07 while Senese and Danco were third and fourth at 2:15.37 and 2:18.10 respectively. Rolfsen took seventh in the event with a time of 2:24.20.
Mugg, Bjorkholm and Rolfsen went 1-2-3 in the 500 free with Mugg posting a time of 4:48.16 while Bjorkholm finished at 4:51.10 and Rolfsen came in at 4:59.37. Roach took eighth in the race with a time of 5:16.36.
Thoss and Taylor were second and third in the 100 fly while Senese finished eighth. Thoss edged Taylor for second touching the wall at 52.35 seconds while Taylor was at 52.70 seconds and Senese finished at 56.17 seconds.
Turcios, Sosa and Smith took the top three spots in the 200 individual medley with Turcios posting a winning time of 1:58.04 while Sosa was at 1:58.85 and Smith finished at 2:02.43.
Lewis' 200 free relay team of Star, Fox, Smith and Kissel won the event with a time of 1:28 while the foursome of Ramsey, Soltys, Thoss and Turcios finished fifth at 1:31.06.
The Flyers return to the pool next Saturday hosting St. Ambrose and Maryville at 1 p.m. at the Lewis Swimming Pool.
