ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's basketball team extended its winning streak to four with an 84-50 win on Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Center in Liberty, Mo. The Flyers improve to 9-12, 7-6 GLVC while the Cardinals fall to 1-21, 0-16 GLVC.
Lewis never trailed in the contest as it scored the first seven points of the game and led by as many as 18 in the first 10 minutes after a pair of free throws from
Lily Courier (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township). The Flyers shot 57 percent from the floor in the stanza and 73 percent at the foul line.
Kathryn Schmidt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central) and
Amelia Motz (Canton, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) combined to score 17 of Lewis' 24 points in the frame.
Lewis shot 53 percent from the second quarter and outscored Jewell 21-10 to take a 26-point lead into the half.
Lily Courier (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) and
Grace Hilber (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) had 11 of the team's 21 points in the stanza.
The third quarter was evenly match with each team scoring 19 points. Schmidt had 10 of those while Hilber added five more as the Flyers took their 26-point lead into the final 10 minutes.
Lewis extended its lead to as many as 35 with 1:37 remaining after a layup by
Lauren Ramsey (Oak Lawn, Ill./Mother McAuley).
The 84 points scored were a season-high for the Flyers while they allowed a season-low 50 points. Lewis shot a season-best 55 percent (32-for-58) from the floor including 6-of-16 from three and 74 percent at the foul line. It outrebounded the Cardinals 35-23, outscored them 48-22 in the paint, 25-10 in points off turnovers and 37-6 in bench points.
Schmidt led four Flyers in double figures with a game-high 21 points while Hilber and Motz added 13 points apiece and
Shawnton Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) added 12 off the bench. Schmidt also added five assists and five steals. Brown and Courier had five rebounds each.
Jewell was held to 38 percent shooting (18-for-47) from the floor, was 5-of-19 from three and shot 60 percent at the foul line. Lea Finn led the Cardinals with 15 points while Katie Knock chipped in with 13.
Lewis begins a four-game homestand on Tuesday (Feb. 15) hosting No. 23 Missouri-St. Louis at 4:30 p.m.
