LOCKPORT, Ill. - The No. 20 Lewis University women's bowling team won its first-ever tournament title Sunday (Feb. 13), defeating No. 13 Maryville 4-2 in the championship match of the Flyer Classic at Strike N Spare Lanes.
The Flyers (38-24) lost the first two games 217-181 and 208-169 before bouncing back to win the final four games 216-182, 235-201, 180-172 and 209-203.
"I am so proud of the entire team," Lewis head coach
Scott Taylor said. "We showed incredible teamwork all weekend and that paid off. We never gave up when we were behind and made some clutch shots down the stretch."
Lewis opened the day with a loss to the Saints 4-1 (164-190, 166-242, 181-196, 183-217, 230-236) before rebounding to beat Alabama-Birmingham 4-1 (185-159, 215-162, 214-199, 176-219, 224-174) to advance to the championship.
The Flyers went 4-1 on Friday to open play and sat in second place after shooting a 4,821. They opened the day with a school-record 1,081-842 win over Quincy then beat North Central 901-778. They then beat Carroll 935-853 and Illinois Wesleyan 965-577 before falling to Augustana 946-939.
On Saturday during traditional play Lewis went 4-0 with 4,677 pins to remain in second. It defeated Aurora 952-927, UAB 984-968, Kentucky Wesleyan 912-849 and Carthage 1027-905. Lewis shot 802 while facing the bye.
The Flyers were led in traditional play by
Kylie Johnson (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere North), who finished in ninth place with a 994.
Kelsey Olson (South Beloit, ILL./Hononegah) took 12th place with a 974, while
DeAlani Fishbeck (Lawton, Okla./Lawton) had a 919 to place 19th.
Kayla Dench (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield East) shot a 750 in four games,
Alyson Young (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) had a 602 in three games,
Savanna Jourdan (Oswego, ILL./Oswego) rolled a 151 game,
Morgan Lane (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) had a 144 game and
Erica Lohr (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) shot a 143 game.
Lewis travels to Arkansas for the Mid-Winter Classic, which begins Friday in Jonesboro.
