ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's softball team extended its win streak to four winning both of its games at the Lewis Dome Invitational at The Dome at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex on Saturday. The Flyers defeated Minnesota State-Moorhead 8-0 in five innings in the first game of the day and then defeated Ursuline 5-2 in the afternoon contest.
Game 1 – Lewis 8 Minnesota State-Moorhead 0 5 innings
The Flyers (4-4) sent 13 batters to the plate scoring eight runs on five hits in the home half of the first.
Sara Serena (Kankakee, Ill./Kankakee) drove in
Delaney Garden (Carpentersville, Ill./H.D. Jacobs) and
Ella Jacobson (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) with a single to left to drive in the first two runs.
Carrie Anderson (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah Community) added to the lead driving in
Evie Calderon (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) with a single down the left field line and then
Jalyn Powell (Tolono, Ill./Unity) drove in
Maggie Joutras (Shorewood, Ill./Providence Catholic High School) and Anderson with a single to center to make it 5-0. Powell and
Payton Wuske (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) scored on a missed throw by the first baseman to make it 7-0 and then Jacobson capped the inning with a single to right to drive in
Meghan Bontrager (Milford, Ind./Northridge).
That was all the run support that Serena needed as she held the Dragons (2-6) to just three hits in the five inning affair. She struck out four and walked one in the contest.
Anderson led the way with two hits in the contest while Garden, Jacobson, Serena, Joutras and Powell had a hit apiece.
Game 2 – Lewis 5 Ursuline 2
Lewis jumped out to a 3-0 lead in its second game against the Arrows (2-7). Calderon drove in Garden and Jacobson with a double to left center for the first two runs of the game. Calderon scored later in the inning on Joutras sacrifice fly to left.
Ursuline got a run back in the second on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sara Fessler which scored Devan Peterson.
The Arrows had a chance to tie the game in the third loading the bases with two out but Wuske retired Jovanna Herrera on a ground ball to second to escape the jam.
Ursuline had the tying runs in scoring position with one out in the fourth but Alyssa Baratta flew out to right and Serena fired a strike to
Gabi Nilles (North Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) who tagged out Ashley Buttolph for the inning ending double play.
The Flyers took advantage of two Arrow errors to add two insurance runs in the sixth. Powell hit a ground-rule double down the left field line to score Joutras and Anderson scored on a fielder's choice to make it 5-1.
Ursuline scored its final run in the seventh as Maddie Fields hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Baratta.
Lewis was outhit in the contest 11-5. Jacobson, Calderon, Powell, Nilles and
Kristin Kavalauskas (Oak Forest, Ill./Tinley Park) had a hit apiece.
Wuske picked up her second straight win allowing two runs on 11 hits with a pair of strikeouts and five walks in the contest to move to 2-1 on the season.
Lewis plays its final game in the Lewis Dome Invitational against Hillsdale at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning at The Dome at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont, Ill.
