ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Lewis University women's basketball team fell to Truman State 74-61 Thursday (Feb. 3) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers dropped to 5-12 overall, 3-6 in the GLVC, while the Bulldogs move to 15-6 overall, 11-2 in the GLVC.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 10-4 advantage with 3:54 left in the first quarter before six straight points by the Flyers evened the score at 10-10. Truman ended the first quarter with a 14-12 advantage.
Lewis moved ahead for the first time in the game early in the second quarter on a layup by
Kathryn Schmidt (Hampshire, Ill./Burlington Central) to take a 21-20 advantage and
Lily Courier (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township) followed up with a basket for a 23-20 lead to finish off a 6-0 run.
After a Truman basket Schmidt hit a jumper to regain a three-point lead for Lewis with 5:04 left in the half. However, that was the final basket of the half for the Flyers as the Bulldogs scored the final five points of the half to take a 27-25 lead at the break.
Truman opened the scoring in the third quarter with a basket before Courier responded with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one. The Flyers regained the lead after a three-point play by
Shawnton Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central), followed by a jumper by
Grace Hilber (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie)Â as they led 33-32.
The Bulldogs came back with six straight points before free throws by
Amelia Motz (Canton, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) stopped the run. The Bulldogs steadily built the lead from there, taking a 53-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
The lead was built to 60-43 early in the fourth quarter, but the Flyers rallied with a 7-2 spurt to pull within 12 points at 62-50 with 5:43 left. However, Truman responded with a 10-2 run to pull away.
Schmidt led the Flyers with 14 points, while Courier had 13 points and Motz tallied 12 points. The Flyers forced 21 turnovers while committing just eight, but were outrebounded 44-22. Lewis shot 38.1 percent (24-of-63) from the field, while Truman shot 57.7 percent (30-of-52).
The Flyers continue their homestand Saturday (Feb. 5) against Quincy with a 1 p.m. tipoff.
