ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's women's basketball team withstood a second half rally to defeat Quincy 57-55 on Saturday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 6-12, 4-6 GLVC while the Hawks drop to 6-16, 2-12 GLVC.
Lewis dominated the opening quarter outscoring Quincy 20-6 and shooting 50 percent from the floor while holding the Hawks to just 21 percent shooting.
Grace Hilber (Sun Prairie, Wis./Sun Prairie) led the Flyers with seven points in the frame while
Shawnton Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) added six and
Taylor Gugliuzza (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way West) chipped in with five.
Lewis extended its lead to as many as 18 points five minutes into the second quarter as
Amelia Motz (Canton, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) competed an old fashioned three-point play. Quincy cut the lead to 11 late in the half but a layup from Motz in the closing seconds gave the Flyers a 32-19 lead at the intermission.
The Hawks opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to cut Lewis' lead to just six but Hilber and Brown combined to score the next five points to extend the lead back to double digits. Quincy then proceeded to score the final eight points of the quarter to trim the Flyer lead to three heading into the final 10 minutes.
Lewis pushed its lead to as many as eight in the final stanza but the Hawks refused to go away getting as close as one at 56-55 after a three-pointer from Dami Adeyinka from the top of the key with 0:05 remaining. The Flyers called a timeout to advance the ball into the front court and out of the timeout Hilber was fouled and went to the line where she hit 1-of-2 to make it a two-point game.
Lewis had a foul to give and elected to do so in front of the Hawk bench with less than four seconds to play. Quincy had a chance at a game-winning three but
Stephanie Hart (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) blocked Beth Matas Martin's attempt and Gugliuzza secured the rebound as the clock expired.
Hilber led all scorers with a career-high 26 points and was joined in double figures by Gugliuzza with 10 while Brown finished with eight points. The Flyers shot 35 percent (18-for-51) in the contest including 6-of-17 from three and shot 83 percent at the foul line. Lewis won the battle of the boards 34-to-28.
The Hawks shot 41 percent in the contest and were 8-of-18 from three and shot 100 percent at the foul line. Adeyinka led Quincy with 17 points and Matas Martin added 15 points to go along with seven assists.
The Flyers conclude their three-game homestand on Monday taking on Illinois Springfield at 5:30 p.m. at Neil Carey Arena. Monday's game is a makeup of the game originally scheduled for January 2.
