ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's baseball team opened up Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play splitting a doubleheader against the University of Indianapolis on Friday afternoon at Brennan Field. Lewis dropped the opener to Indianapolis 8-1 and battled back to win the nightcap 6-5 with a walk-off single in the seventh. The Flyers are now 5-9-1 on the season, 1-1 in GLVC play while the Greyhounds are 6-10, 1-1 in GLVC play.
 
Game 1 – UIndy 8, Lewis 1
 
UIndy jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on two hits and an error. The action started early with a leadoff walk and a two-run homerun by Alex Vela for the first two runs of the inning. The Greyhounds added a third run later in the inning on a double to right center by Armen Torosian scoring Denton Shepler.
 
UIndy scored three more run in the third on three hits highlighted by a double by Torosian and a two-run single up the middle by Will Spear.
 
The Hounds added to their lead in the top of the seventh scoring two runs to increase their lead to 8-0 on Torosian's two-run homer for his third and fourth RBIs of the game.
 
The Flyers got on the board in bottom of the seventh after a throwing error on 
Dalton Meredith's (Debary, Fla./University) fielder's choice which allowed 
Dalton Crowder (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East) to score from second on the error to give Lewis their only run of the game.
 
Lewis' two hits consisted of a double by Joe Pressuer and a single by 
Angelo Cantelo (Blue Island, Ill./Marian Catholic). 
Ben Davis (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) (2-2) suffered the loss giving up five hits, six earned runs, five walks, and two strikeouts in 2.2 innings pitched.
 
Xavier Rivas of Indianapolis pitched a complete game to pick up the win giving up two hits and one walk while striking out 11 in the contest.
 
Game 2 – Lewis 6, UIndy 5
 
The Hounds jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap as Caleb Vaughn hit the second pitch of the contest over the fence for his third home run of the season.
 
Lewis answered back with two of their own in the bottom half of the first on two hits and a Greyhounds error. 
Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) tied the game with his first home run of the season. 
Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) was hit by a pitch and Cantelo reached on an error by the third basemen, 
Julian Everett (Frankfort, Ill/Lincoln Way East) grounded out to the pitcher to advance bother runners. Barry scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
 
Indianapolis tied the game in the top of the fourth after Brandon DeWitt singled to start the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Nathan Fish.
 
The Flyers answered back in the bottom half of the fourth scoring two runs on two hits and an error. Preusser lead off with a walk and 
David Ascencio (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) singled to left field, 
Ian Nguyen (Anoka, Minn./Coons Rapids) singled on a ground ball to second to drive in Preusser. Ascencio scored on the play as well as Drew Donaldson tried to throw out Nguyen at first but his throw was wild allowing Ascencio to score on the error.
 
The Greyhounds scored twice in the fifth to tie the score at four. Vaughn singled to left field scoring Will Spear and Adam Rakestraw.
 
Lewis regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning scoring a run after a double by Preusser and a single by Ascencio which scored Preusser to give the Flyers a 5-4 lead.
 
UIndy tied the game in the top of the sixth as Fish led the inning off with a solo home run down the right field line.
 
The Flyers won it in the seventh as they loaded the bases with one out in the inning. Ascencio started the rally with a single to third off the glove of Torosian at third. Nguyen walked and Crowder came into run for Ascencio at second. Keaty got down in the count but battled to single to center to load the bases. Fox delivered the game-winning single lining one past a diving Torosian into left field to score Crowder with the winning run.
 
Ascencio led the Lewis with three hits in the contest while Fox and Keaty had two hits apiece. Fox drove in two runs while Ascencio and Nguyen had an RBI apiece.
 
Matt Helwig (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) (1-0) picked up his first win of the season striking out two in his one inning of work.
 
The Flyers continue their series against Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon with a single nine-inning game scheduled to start at noon.
