ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's baseball team dropped the third game of its weekend series against Indianapolis 5-3 on Saturday afternoon at Brennan Field. The Flyers drop to 5-10-1, 1-2 GLVC while the Greyhounds improve to 7-10, 2-1 GLVC.

UIndy jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a hit and two errors. Its first two hitters reached via a walk and a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Drew Donaldson. Zack Williams reached on a fielder's choice back to the mound. Anthony Sorrentino (Burr Ridge, Ill./Lyons Township) tried to throw Caleb Vaughn out at the plate but his throw was offline which allowed Vaughn and Brandon DeWitt to score. The third run came across later in the inning on a fielding error by Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) allowing Williams to score from third.

The Flyers tied the game in the bottom of the third inning scoring three runs on four hits. Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) and David Ascencio (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) led off the inning with back-to-back hits. With one out, Davey Fitzpatrick (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) drove in Alt with a single down the left field line. Joe Preusser (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice) tied the game hitting a triple to right center to bring home Ascencio and Fitzpatrick. Lewis had a chance to take the lead but left the bases loaded to end the inning.

UIndy retook the lead with two runs in the top of the ninth. The Hounds rally started with a one out single down the left field line from Zach Fell. Vaughn followed with a walk to put runners on first and second. Jake Lotz (Palos Hills, Ill./St. Laurence) was called on to relieve Michael Scalafani and struck out the first hitter he faced for the second out of the inning.

Lotz hit Donaldson to load the bases to bring up Williams. Lotz fell behind in the count 2-1 but got Williams to pop up in between home plate and the mound. Ascenico, Lotz and Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) converged on it but the ball fell the ground allowing Fell and Vaughn to score.

Lewis brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth after a two-out single by Alt, but Cameron Ginter got Ascencio to line out softly to second for the final out of the contest.

The Flyers outhit the Greyhounds 8-6 in the contest but committed four errors. Alt and Preusser led Lewis with two hits each. Lotz was the tough luck loser to fall to 1-2 on the season.

The Flyers go for the series split on Sunday afternoon against UIndy at 12 p.m. at Brennan Field.
