ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's baseball team defeated Indianapolis 8-3 in the series finale to secure the split in the four-game series on Sunday afternoon at Brennan Field. The Flyers improve 6-10-1 on the season, 2-2 GLVC while the Greyhounds fall to 7-11, 2-2 GLVC.
Lewis jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on two hits.
Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) led off with a walk,
Joe Preusser (Orland Park, Ill./Brother Rice) singled to left, and
David Ascencio (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Kevin Barry (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) singled to center to bring in Fox for the first run of the game. The second run scored on
Angelo Cantelo's (Blue Island, Ill./Marian Catholic) fielder's choice grounder to third with the bases loaded scoring Preusser.
The Greyhounds got one back in the top of the second as the first three batters reached via a single, walk, and hit-by-pitch to load the bases.
Jonathon Hanscom (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) got Hunter Hughes to ground into a double play with bases loaded which scored Drew Donaldson from third.
The Flyers sent ten batters to the plate in the bottom of the second scoring five runs on five hits and one error. After two quick outs,
Ian Nguyen (Anoka, Minn./Coons Rapids) got the rally started with an infield single followed by a double by Fox scoring Nguyen. An error by Kase Lawson at first put runners on the corner. Ascencio singled up the middle to score Fox to make it 4-1. After a walk to Barry loaded the bases, Cantelo cleared them with a double off the fence in left.
UIndy answered back with one in the third when Hanscom got Brandon DeWitt to ground into a double play with bases loaded once again to score Nathan Fish. The Greyhounds also got a run back in the sixth on a single by Will Spear to score Armen Torosian from third.
Lewis tacked one in the eighth when
Michael Alt (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) reached on a fielding error by the second basemen allowing Barry, who led off with a walk, to score from second on the error.
The Flyers outhit the Greyhounds in the contest 8-6 and were led by Nguyen with two while Fox, Preusser, Ascencio, Barry, Cantelo and Alt had one apiece. Fox, Preusser and Barry scored two runs apiece.
Hanscom (1-2) picked up the win giving up five hits, two earned runs, and three walks while striking out three in five innings pitched. Hanscom was backed up by
Chad Cwik (Hometown, Ill./Oak Lawn) and
Matt Helwig (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) who pitched a combined four innings giving up only one hit, a run, and two walks while striking out four.
Lewis returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 29, as it takes on St. Xavier in a single game at 3 p.m. at Brennan Field.
