ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's 11th ranked men's volleyball team picked up its second straight win sweeping Emmanuel (Ga.) on Friday evening at Neil Carey Arena. The Flyers improve to 10-6 while the Lions drop to 6-7.
Lewis scored three of the first four points to begin the match but Emmanuel regrouped and came back to take a 10-8 lead after a kill from Carlos Guerrero. The Flyers answered with a 6-1 run of their own to take the lead for good at 14-11 after back-to-back errors from Guerrero and Gustavo Cavalcanti.
Emmanuel wouldn't get closer than two points the rest of the set as Lewis closed the stanza on an 8-3 run to take the opener 25-18.
The Flyers dominated the middle frame as they jumped out to an early five-point lead and wouldn't let the Lions get closer than three points as Lewis cruised to a 25-13 set win. The Flyers hit .458 in the stanza and were led by
Tyler Mitchem (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook HS) with four kills while
Max Roquet (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) and
John Davis (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) had three kills apiece.
The final set featured six ties and four lead changes. Emmanuel grabbed a 12-11 lead after a service ace from Henrik Westhoff but it would be its final lead of the match as Lewis went on a 7-2 run to take a four-point lead after a kill from
Christian Prayer (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North).
The Flyer advantage grew to as much as five after a kill from
Tyler Simpson (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) but the Lions wouldn't go quietly scoring four of the next five points to cut Lewis' lead to 24-22 when Cavalcanti and Jayden Young blocked
Cole Brillhart (York, Pa./Northeastern).
The Flyers closed out the match as
Jason Gibbs (Bellaire, Texas/Bellarie) pushed the ball over the net into the back right corner of the court to seal the victory.
Lewis hit .380 for the contest with 37 kills against 10 errors in 71 swings. Roquet led the way with eight kills while
John Davis (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) finished with six and Mitchem added five.
Kevin Kauling (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) dished out 28 assists and
Carter Burzlaff (Elgin, Ill./Bartlett High School) finished with six digs. Mitchem and
John Davis (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) had five blocks apiece.
The Flyer defense held Emmanuel to a negative .027 hitting percentage finishing with 21 kills against 23 errors in 75 chances. Eli Zdonek led the Lions with seven kills while Cavalcanti and Young had five kills each. Westhoff finished with 19 assists and six digs. Nicklas Eichenberger also had six digs and Cavalcanti served four aces.
Lewis is back in action next Thursday as they travel to Hawaii to take on the Rainbow Warriors at 11 p.m. (CST) in Manoa, Hawaii.
