ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced on Tuesday afternoon that Lewis University sophomore
Casey Smith (Portage, Mich./Portage Central) was named the GLVC Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the period ending April 10.
This is her first career player of the week honor and she's the second Flyer to earn Player of the Week honors this season joining freshman
Sage Hills (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) (2/23/22).
Smith helped Lewis go 3-0 last week as she won all three of her singles matches and partnered with
Nefeli Zafeiri (Greece) at number one doubles to go 3-0 as well.
She opened the week with a straight sets win over Roosevelt's Grace Hahn 6-1, 6-0 and she and Zafeiri defeated Fabiola Rivas and Maria Rivas 6-3 in the first doubles match.
Last Saturday, she knocked off McKendree's Maria Salomao at number three singles in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 and she and Zafeiri beat Camila Fonseca and Viola Cipriani 6-2 at number one doubles.
Smith finished her week rallying for a three-set win over Illinois Springfield's Riann Hsu. She dropped the opening set 3-6 but came back to win 6-4 and 6-2 in the next two to clinch the victory for the Flyers. Smith partnered with Zafeiri to defeat the Prairie Stars Sina Skjelstad and Neha Mokhasi 7-5 in the first doubles match.
Lewis returns home this Friday hosting Maryville at 2 p.m. at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex.
