Lewis Baseball Drops Series Finale At Illinois Springfield

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis University's baseball team dropped the final game of its four-game series at Illinois Springfield 8-2 on Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Ill. The Flyers fall to 10-20-1, 6-10 GLVC while the Prairie Stars move to 29-6, 9-3 GLVC.

Lewis jumped out to the early lead with a run in the first inning. David Ascencio (Joliet, Ill./Plainfield Central) doubled and scored on Michael Alt's (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) double down the left field line.

The Flyers picked up their second run in the second inning as Thomas Fox (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Christian) singled with the bases loaded scoring Gavin Kriegel (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire).

UIS cut Lewis' lead in half with a run in its half of the third. Brandon Bannon doubled to left center to drive in Asher Bradd.

The Prairie Stars took the lead scoring six runs on eight hits in the fifth. Zion Pettigrew hit a three-run homer scoring Bradd and Bannon to give UIS a 4-2 lead. Austin Alderman scored on a balk to make it 5-2. Bobby Barnard singled through the right side of the infield to score Brant Vanaman and Braddsingled through the left side to score Barnard with the final run of the inning.

UIS extended its lead in the sixth as Pettigrew scored on a balk to make it 8-2.

The Flyers got one of those runs back in the seventh as Fox scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Alt to make it 8-3.

Fox drove in his second run of the game hitting his team leading fifth home run with one out in the ninth.

Lewis was outhit in the contest 10-8 and led by Fox, Ascencio and Alt with two hits apiece. Jake Karaba (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) took the loss allowing four runs on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts in four innings pitched.

The Flyers return to the diamond on Tuesday (April 19) as they travel to Kenosha, Wis., to take on Parkside in a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
