ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Lewis University softball team split the third day of the 2024 Dome Invitational Saturday (Feb. 24). The Flyers shutout the Chargers 2-0 then fell to the Bulldogs 5-3.
GAME 1: Lewis 2, Hillsdale 0

SUMMARY
Both teams were scoreless in the first three innings. Lewis was able to strike first in the bottom of the fourth as
Jalyn Powell (Tolono, IL/Unity) connected on her first home run of the season as the senior hit one over the center field wall.
Lewis got an insurance run in the sixth after being scoreless in the fifth.
Meghan Bontrager (Milford, IN/Northridge) started off the inning with a single,
Evie Calderon (Chicago, IL/Whitney Young) walked, then two batters later,
Gabi Nilles (North Aurora, IL/West Aurora) hit a sacrifice fly which made it 2-0.
Delaney Garden (Carpentersville, IL/Harry D. Jacobs High School) (2-2) threw a complete game shutout, only allowing four hits and striking out nine over seven innings of work.
GAME 2: Minnesota-Duluth 5, Lewis 3

SUMMARY
UMD started the scoring with a three spot in the opening inning to make it 3-0. The Bulldogs added to its lead in the second frame after plating a pair of runs which made it 5-0.
Lewis was able to get one back in the bottom half of the inning after Nilles drove home Calderon with a single to right to make it 5-1 Duluth. The Flyers got another one back in the sixth inning after Calderon ripped an RBI double to right center which scored Bontrager to make it 5-2 Bulldogs.
The Flyers rallied in the bottom of the seventh, looking to force extra innings or walk off. Garden started off with a walk then
Erica Hoffman (Hebron, IN/Boone Grove High School) drove her home with a triple which made it 5-3.
UMD was able to get back-to-back outs to end the game and win it 5-3.
Payton Wuske (Frankfort, IL/Lincoln-Way East) (1-1) suffered the setback in the circle after going 1.2 innings allowing five hits and five runs, walking and striking out one.
Allie Wondrasek (New Lenox, IL/Lincoln-Way West High School) recorded 5.1 scoreless frames in relief, allowing four hits, issuing one walk and striking out three.

Lewis will be back in action for the final day of the Lewis Dome Tournament Sunday (Feb. 25) as the Flyers take on Parkside at 12:30 p.m.
