Women's Volleyball Suffers Setback at Maryville

St. Louis, Mo. - Despite 58 total kills as a team, the Lewis University women's volleyball team suffered a 3-1 setback to Maryville Friday evening at Moloney Arena.

With the win, the Saints improved to 8-7 (3-1 GLVC) while the Flyers moved to 9-8 (2-3 GLVC).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Down 1-0 after dropping the first set 25-20, the Flyers began the second stanza on fire as they notched seven of the first 10 points of the frame. Sophomore Marin Grossman (Hortonville, Wis./Hortonville) led Lewis' early attack with three kills as well. The Flyers and Saints traded scoring bursts throughout the rest of the frame, but Lewis sealed the set two victory with a 5-1 run, paced by a pair of kills from junior Sarah Newberry (Fairfield, Ohio/Stephen T Badin) and freshman Ann Kelly Velikov (Orvault, France/C.E.N.S.), to win, 25-20 and tie the match 1-1.

Down 23-17 late in the third stanza Lewis hammered home six of the next seven points, capped by a service ace from junior Kynzie Lilly (Richmond, Texas/Southwest Baptist) to bring the set to within one, 24-23. Still, the Saints snuffed out the Flyers late surge off an attack error as they held on to win, 25-23 and take a 2-1 match lead.

In the final set, the Flyers found themselves down three, 14-11, before a kill from junior Mary Zielinski (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) started a short 4-0 spurt that gave Lewis a slim 15-14 edge. Still, the Saints took the lead for good moments later thanks to a 4-1 run of their own to move ahead, 18-16. Maryville kept Lewis at bay for the remainder of the set to claim the 25-22 set victory and 3-1 match win.

Grossman led Lewis with a career-high 14 kills with Velikov and Newberry chipping in 12 of 11 respecitvly. For Newberry, she led Lewis in blocks with five as well. Junior Lily King (Channahon, Ill./Kent State) provided 26 assists and 19 digs while junior Elena Gubera (Jamestown, Ind./Western Boone) amassed a team-best 23 digs of her own. As a team, Lewis ended the match hitting at a clip of .176 (58-22-205) compared to .181 (56-19-204) for Maryville.

Ella Brinkmann paced the Saints with 18 kills while her teammate Cami Kohmetscher notched 23 assists. On the defensive side of the ball, Oliva Klump tallied 26 digs in the win.
